Eureka Writer: Variety of Models Key to Success
In a new post on ASCD's InService blog, Eureka Math teacher-writer Kate McGill Austin says that students learn best when they can "visualize a math problem in a tangible way and see math in everyday life---- something that is vital for children." Austin walks through a series of sample problems (see an example below) to show that effective math models can provide coherent instruction across grade levels and says that providing students with more than one model helps foster a deep conceptual understanding of math that will help students as the concepts get harder.
