Transition to EngageNY/Eureka Math "is Bearing Fruit"
A recent EdWeek article examines Bethel School District's (Spanaway, WA) transition from a commercial math curriculum to the open education math materials offered on EngageNY, also known as Eureka Math. Elementary school teacher Carrie Thornton, says that "teachers' time spent mastering EngageNY is bearing fruit." Thornton says students "can verbalize what they're doing, and why they're doing it." Not only has the transition been profitable in the classroom, but it has also had a beneficial effect on the district's budget. According to David E. Hammond, Bethel's assistant superintendent for elementary education, the transition to OER is predicted to "reduce costs by $500,000 to $800,000 over a 10-year period."

What's on the Test?
In a new blog, LSU professor Scott Baldridge (the lead writer and mathematician of
Eureka Math) and assistant professor at the University of Memphis Ben McCarty (Eureka mathematician for PK-5) compare math problems from a Tennessee state assessment to problems from Eureka Math. The examples Baldridge and McCarty provide display similarities in problem content and characteristics, such as language and format.
