April 20, 2015
Dear ARZA Canada Members,

This week marks the 67th anniversary of the founding of the State of Israel.   Despite all the press articles, politics and anti- zionist activity that sometimes concern us, we need to  celebrate the miracle of the State of Israel , our homeland. So much has been accomplished and so much more will be achieved by Israelis of all walks of life.   Please take a moment on Yom Haazmaut, April 23, to think about your wishes for the future of Israel. There are celebrations going on in most synagogues please try and join in and show your support.

The day before Yom Haazmaut is  Yom Hazikaron  when Israelis remember the over 23,000 fallen soldiers and victims of terror. Yom Hazikaron is a very moving experience in Israel (read about it in the excellent article below entitled "Israeli Perspective"). In most cities
there  will be memorial ceremonies to commemorate  the day. I would urge you to attend the event in your area  to join together with Israelis living in Canada. In Toronto it will be at Beth Tzdec Synagogue on April 21 at 7:30pm.

An Israeli Perspective: Israeli Memorial and Independence Day

Being an Israeli, one of the hardest things to deal with - and as far as I know it is unique to Israel - is the seemingly unbelievable and immediate passage between sorrow and celebration, as portrayed in the pairing of Yom HaZikaron (Israel's Memorial Day) and Yom HaAtzmaut (Israel's Independence Day). The idea behind this is that the day before celebrating our independence, we are reminded of the price and sacrifice made by so many in order to keep us free. Read full article.
