Dear ARZA Canada member,

This week Israeli Consul General DJ Schneeweiss spoke to the Reform community in Toronto about the situation in Israel.

He asked us to keep in mind that the current war is a point in the arc of Jewish history, that Israel is the collective canvass of the Jewish people - a painting still in progress - and that Israel is less about crisis Zionism than "aspirational Zionism".

The Consul General spoke about three hopes for the world in one year from now - that Israelis can live peacefully, that the West will restore its "moral compass" (and not fall into easy criticism of Israel), and that Canada will continue to be a strong supporter.

To achieve stability in Gaza, the Consul General would like to see a more open border for Gazans,  if Hamas can be stopped from re-arming.

Shabbat Message from Israel Reform Movement

Dear friends and colleagues in Israel and around the world - shalom,

This week's Torah portion - "Ekev" presents throughout its entirety the goodness of Eretz Israel - the Land of Israel - "For Adonai our God bringeth thee into a good land... a land of wheat and barley, and vines and fig-trees and pomegranates; a land of olive-trees and honey..." (Deuteronomy 8, 7-8). At the height of difficult and complex times here in Israel, the ending of which is yet unclear, this Torah portion serves as an important reminder to the strength of Israel and its promise to us and to our children.

Who Won?

Opinions vary on whether Hamas suffered a setback to both its military strength and popularity, for bringing destruction on Gaza, or whether it in fact enhanced its reputation by withstanding Israel's assault with its leadership and its rocket-launching capability intact.

National Review

Victor Davis Hansen is optimistic.  He argues that Israel won the war, and that Europe's anti-Israel position is looking ever more indefensible.

Israel Hayom agrees that Hamas suffered a significant setback from the war, which should be good news for residents of the south.

But despite the damage done to Hamas, their leadership and a large rocket supply remain protected in underground bunkers.

Times of Israel

Is compromise possible?

Israel's condition for a cease-fire is removing Hamas' ability to conduct future wars, while Hamas wants the open borders it needs to re-arm and re-build its war machine.  Is there a middle ground?

Israel offers reconstruction in return for demilitarization of Gaza.

But Ken Stein reminds us that Hamas has for decades been consistent in its rejection of peace with Israel.

While the Times of Israel says we shouldn't hold our breath for an internal revolt against Hamas.

Why do they hate us?

As vocal groups across the West crank up exaggerated accusations against Israel, Yair Lapid sees a bad case of moral relativism, which he blames on intellectual laziness.

A personal reflection

And lastly, when Anat Hoffman of the Israel Religious Action Centre reflects on her son's enlistment, she fears for both his body and soul.
