IRAC forces end to discriminatory yeshiva stipends

 

Haredim in Israel will no longer be paid by the government to study full time.  The Israeli Reform movement's Israel Religious Action Center (IRAC) is part of a coalition that successfully argued against paying yeshiva students to study full-time, because university students don't receive the same benefit.

Rabbi Dow Marmur was invited to speak at a United Church symposium on Israel/Palestine.  He reports that the Church's highly critical position towards Israel leaves several important questions unanswered.

Although peace isn't possible now, both Ari Shavit and Rabbi Donniel Hartman recommend that Israel maintain the moral upper hand through a humanitarian approach to occupation of the West Bank, including a slow reduction of the civilian population beyond the security fence and Palestinian economic development.

Price tag attacks

 

 

Israel is seeing a rash of attacks against Arabs and Arab property, and not just in the territories.

 

Daniel Gordis says it's time for Israelis to stand up and demand an end to these so-called "price tag" crimes.  

 

Is Israel doing enough to arrest those responsible for these attacks?  The US State Department criticized Israel for its weak response to this growing problem, but Israel's police chief says that it's stepping up efforts.

A highlight of Yom HaAtzmaut celebration in Israel is the recognition of 12 prominent Israelis, who receive the honour of torch bearers for the ceremony on Mount Herzl.  This year, for the first time, all of the torch bearers were women.
