Word of Hebrew
Here's a phrase that reminds us that it's springtime. If something is appearing everywhere, you can say that:
Zeh pore'ach kmo pitriot achrei ha-geshem
זה פורח כמו פטריות אחרי הגשם
Literally: It sprouts up like mushrooms after a rain

April, 2014
Dear ARZA Canada Members,
On behalf of the ARZA Canada Board, I want to wish you and your family a very Happy Passover .
Our traditions and practices regarding the seder are rich and varied making this a wonderful time for us to remember our history and celebrate our freedom in so many ways.
However, all of us will probably end the seder with the words " next year in Jerusalem". May I suggest, even though that will be after 4 glasses of wine, you contemplate that thought for a moment and have one final discussion around the table about how you can plan to visit Israel in the coming year to witness the modern day miracle that is the State of Israel.

Debate is raging inside Israel and out, on the importance of the Palestinians recognizing Israel as a Jewish State. Rabbi Donniel Hartman agrees with the intent - to end future claims to Israeli territory - but says the term Jewish State is undefined (does it mean the state is religious? if so, how?), so it's a poor way to express the point. A Jewish State....Click here for moreWriter Ari Shavit is in favour of recognizing a Jewish State, saying that if peace requires a Palestinian state, it also requires a Jewish state. But this has left him in a war of opinion columns with his own editor at Haaretz.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas flew to Washington to tell President Obama that he will not recognize Israel as a Jewish State, and will not relinquish either the right of return or future claims.

Rejecting Kerry framework...
Unfortunately for President Abbas's effort to establish a state of Palestine by engaging the UN directly, the "State of Palestine" is in violation of 11 of the 15 treaties Abbas just signed.

Also writing in Haaretz, former Union of Reform Judaism President Eric Yoffie reports that Michael Oren (former Israeli Ambassador to the US) proposed that, should the peace talks fail, Israel should undertake a unilateral withdrawal from parts of the West Bank, in order to set its own border.

Yossi Klein Halevi says that the growing number of Israeli centrists view a Palestinian state as both an existential necessity and an existential threat to Israel.

Jimmy Carter opposes BDS

Former US President Jimmy Carter is certainly confused by the term Jewish State. When asked whether he favours such recognition , he responded: "
to force the Arab people to say that all the Arab people in Israel have to be Jews, I think that's going too far". On a positive note, Carter opposes the boycotts, divestment and sanctions against Israel.

Given that Leonard Cohen's popular song Hallelujah is a dialogue with God containing biblical references, perhaps it was always intended to be sung in Hebrew. Click here to enjoy the Hebrew version, sung by a female Israeli cantor.
