April is National Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Child Abuse Prevention Month.  For many of us, it will be marked by fund raising efforts, days of remembrance and calls to action.  It will be a month, though, unchanged by the staggering facts:
  • Every two minutes in the U.S., someone is sexually assaulted.
  • One in five women and one in 16 men are sexually assaulted while in college.
  • One in four girls and one in six boys will be sexually abused before they turn 18 years old.
  • More than five children die every day in this country as a result of child abuse and neglect, and up to 15 million witness domestic violence in their homes each year.

In recognition of SAAM, Women Make Movies is offering
50% off related titles until May 6. President Obama issued SAAM and Child Abuse Prevention Month proclamations. To recognize April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution earlier this month.

Check out these special SAAM resources. There are lots of sexual assault and child abuse trainings and events. You may find the  documents and links on these issues on NCDSV's website helpful.

April 27 is Denim Day.  Wear jeans with purpose, support survivors, and educate yourself and others about sexual assault.  The National Center has long been a co-sponsor of Denim Day activities nationwide.  Take the pledge:
  • I promise to recognize that sexual violence is everyone's issue.
  • I promise to participate in the national conversation about rape and sexual violence with the hashtags #GearUp and #DenimDay.
  • I promise to support survivors and not blame the victim.
  • I promise to engage in healthy and violence free relationships.

A Must-Attend Conference

Plan to attend the BISC-MI 21st Annual Conference, November 2-4, 2016 in Dearborn, MI. The National Center is co-sponsoring the conference again this year and NCDSV's Debby Tucker will be part of the faculty.

BISC-MI has taken the lead in the last 21 years of bringing together some of the best faculty from around the world to address controversial issues and provide unequaled networking opportunities.  This year will be no exception.  This conference is an unprecedented opportunity to hear and mingle with some of the leading experts from around the world.

This spring, the Joyful Heart Foundation and 1in6 released a new series in the groundbreaking, celebrity-driven NO MORE PSA campaign to address myths and excuses surrounding males who have experienced childhood sexual abuse, and to invite male survivors to seek help at 1in6.org.  The National Center is a proud supporter of the NO MORE campaign.

Your mom will have something to smile about this Mother's Day with a new watch, charm, scarf or earrings from our long-time supporters at  BraveletsShe would also appreciate anything from their growing collection of stylish bracelets, necklaces, rings and rope bracelets.  Buy the sexual violence (teal) and domestic violence (purple) awareness jewelry today! Enjoy the photos and interview with NCDSV's Debby Tucker for Bravelets' Blog earlier this month.

A fourth way you and your mom will be all smiles this Mother's Day is with gifts from AmazonSmile. The National Center also receives a portion of the purchase price!

If you already shop at Amazon, then AmazonSmile is an easy and fun way to support the National Center.  On the other hand, if you aren't currently an Amazon customer, then this might be the perfect time to try it out!

AmazonSmile is a simple and automatic way for you to support the National Center every time you shop, at no cost to you.
When you shop at AmazonSmile, you'll find the exact same products, features, services and low prices as Amazon.com, with the added bonus that Amazon donates a portion of the purchase price to your favorite charitable organization.

How It Works

To support the NCDSV, simply go to smile.amazon.com and log-in or create a new account.  Once you've logged in, you will be prompted to select a charity.  Enter "National Center on Domestic and Sexual Violence" in the search box and it will show our organization in the results.

After selecting us as your charitable organization, all you have to do is shop!  The AmazonSmile Foundation will donate 0.5% of the purchase price from all your eligible purchases.  There are tens of millions of products on AmazonSmile eligible for donations.  You will see eligible products marked with "Eligible for AmazonSmile donation".  Thank you for considering the National Center as your charitable organization of choice.

Each of these four ways helps advance the work of the National Center and is much appreciated.  Donations can also be made directly in honor of your Mother and we'll send her a notice of your generosity.

Thank you for however you choose to support NCDSV!
Congratulations, Debby!

Debby Tucker, the National Center's President, recently received the Vivian Miles Lifetime Achievement Award from the Texas Association Against Sexual Assault.  Nominated by TAASA's Executive Director, Annette Burrhas-Clay, they honored Debby at their 34th Annual Statewide Conference in Corpus Christi in March. Since she was unable to attend the ceremony long-time friend, D'An Anders, Victim Advocate with Texas Legal Services Center, accepted the award on her behalf.

The award program described Debby's contribution to the movement this way, "... Whether working as a SA Victim advocate, or working on the intersections of sexual assault and domestic violence, or being deeply involved in federal policy work as part of the National Task Force to End Sexual and Domestic Violence, she continues to make a positive impact on the lives of sexual assault survivors in Texas and across the nation."
