High-Tech Fashion That Saves Lives and Benefits NCDSV!

The National Center is partnering with Secure Courture, LLC, a technology startup with the mission to empower women by increasing their control over their personal security.  This month Stiletto launched the most advanced personal security wearable ever made.

NCDSV's Debby Tucker says about Stiletto, "Secure, Stylish and Smart!  I am so very pleased with how well Stiletto works and looks.  I know I'll be glad to wear one.  The National Center is so appreciative of the dogged determination and creativity that our partners Alexander and Daniel Gladstone, have put into making this product both effective and attractive."

Stiletto is available for pre-order in an Indiegogo campaign through November 20 to generate the needed funds to go into production, when a percentage of the profits will benefit the National Center.  Now, for every "like" on the Stiletto by Secure Couture Facebook page, Daniel has pledged to donate $1.00 to NCDSV!

VAWA Turns 20!

On September 13, 1994 the Violence Against Women Act passed.  To celebrate this important milestone, advocates gathered in Washington, DC on September 9.
(from L to R) Juley Fulcher, formerly with Break the Cycle; Debby Tucker, NCDSV; and Pat Reuss, Legal Momentum and NOW.
NCDSV's Debby Tucker participated in the gathering at the National Archives and then later that evening at the home of Vice President Joe Biden. The National Task Force to End Sexual and Domestic Violence Against  Women held a lovely affair at the National Museum of Women in the Arts, see photo on the left of three women who helped start the Task Force  and who lobbied for VAWA in the early days.

(from L to R) Gretta Gardner, Austin / Travis County Family Violence Task Force; Stacey Dougan, Board Chair, Men Stopping Violence; and Robin Hassler Thompson, Center for Advancement of Human Rights.

Lisalynn Jacobs, Legal Momentum, spoke eloquently in honor of Pat Reuss at a reception hosted by Mary Kay and the Mary Kay Foundation.  Several Unsung Heroes from across the nation were also recognized, including our own steadfast hometown leader Gretta Gardner, Chair of the Austin / Travis County Family Violence Task Force!

Throughout the month there were numerous media accounts and #VetoViolence against women, a month-long social media campaign touting VAWA's accomplishments during the past 20 years.

Gabby Giffords Invites Debby Tucker and Other Leaders to Join Leadership Network to Help Protect Women in the U.S. #ProtectAllWomen

On the heels of the first-ever U.S. Senate hearing on the intersection of gun violence and domestic violence, July 30, 2014, former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and other national women leaders announced the #ProtectAllWomen Leadership Network to educate state and federal leaders on the needs for solutions that protect women from gun violence.

"Time and time again,we have seen that guns and domestic violence are a lethal mix.  When an individual with a demonstrated history of domestic abuse or stalking decides to use a gun, the results are usually deadly for women.  Stronger laws that keep guns out of the hands of those know to use domestic and sexual violence and stalking will help protect women and make our communities safer," said Deborah D. Tucker, Executive Director, National Center on Domestic and Sexual Violence.

The Network generated numerous media accounts across the country after the historic hearing, including this op-ed published in the Austin American-Statesman.  As part of the 20th Anniversary celebration for the Violence Against Women Act, the Network hosted a news conference at the National Press Club in Washington, DC.  NCDSV's Debby Tucker was glad to meet several people she's admired, including Bonnie Engelbardt Lautenberg, widow of the remarkable Senator Frank Lautenberg.
