Mall Madness

Girl Scouts Having Fun!

The 2013 Mall Madness on September 24 in Wichita was a huge success. Girls spent the evening at Towne West Mall trying out different activities, getting ready for another year in Girl Scouts, and having a blast! The Kansas Food Bank announced that the Girl Scouts collected 305 pounds of food, which equates to 254 meals. This is great news! Check out photos from the events on Flickr here.

Girl Scout Bronze Award

Juniors lend a hand

Want to learn more about helping girls through earn their Bronze Award? Read on!

The Girl Scout Bronze Award is the highest honor a Girl Scout Junior can achieve. Imagine what girls can accomplish when they team up with others and use their special skills and interests to take action and make a difference in the world!

Here are the first few steps for girls to take:

  1. Go on a Girl Scout Junior Journey.
  2. Build your Girl Scout Junior team: an expert in the topic, leaders, parents, friends, troop.
  3. Explore your community.
  4. Research an issue that is important to you and interview experts. Adults and girls download the companion guides
  5. Choose your Girl Scout Bronze Award project and make a plan.

After that, girls will implement their plan, making sure to get permission for any money earning activities, and start making a difference in their community. Earning the Girl Scout Bronze Award involves the time to complete a Journey, and another 20 hours that includes building their team, exploring their community, choosing their project, planning it, putting it into motion, and spreading the word.

Get Ready for Outdoor Activities

Thinking about camping as a troop or a SU day camp?

GSKH Outdoor Leadership courses are required before facilitating outdoor activities with girls.

  • The home-study Outdoor Leadership Basics 100 can be completed on your own time, and prepares volunteers to take troops or groups out for the day to hike, have a picnic, and get a taste of outdoor fun (without fire-building or outdoor cooking).
  • By completing Outdoor Leadership 101, volunteers will be qualified to plan and have backyard camp-outs, host and attend day camps, and have a camping adventure within their own community or stay at any Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland Camp property (with the exception of semi-primitive camp sites). Volunteers will also be able to lead cookouts and have campfires.
  • Outdoor Leadership 201 provides additional skills necessary required for any overnight camping (tents, A-frames, rustic cabins, etc.) outside your community and semi-primitive camping.
