Moore, OK Cleanup
An update from GSKH on progress
We stand with all Girl Scouts with thoughts and prayers to all of those who have been affected by the tornado in Moore, OK on Monday, May 20. Nationally and locally, Girl Scout communities are contemplating the first steps to helping our neighbors from the south. It has been shared that the current death toll now includes a Girl Scout who was a member of the Western Oklahoma Council. It is important to take time to reflect upon the situation and mourn the losses of this community.
Naturally, we each want to take immediate steps to show support and contribute. The Girl Scouts-Western Oklahoma Council has shared that they appreciate all of the good wishes, but is unable to handle all of the calls and emails at this time. They ask that you not call or email the council, but instead check its website or social media feeds for the latest information. Also, it has been shared that the council cannot accommodate material donations, such as blankets and other goods. Instead, the council has created the Girl Scouts Western Oklahoma Tornado Relief Fund that will help get troops back up and running, provide scholarships for program and camp participation, and offer other support to Girl Scouts in the affected areas. You can text the word GIRLS to 20222 to make a $10 donation.
Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland will be exploring future options of support and will continue to post as we hear more. As several leaders have shared, practicing our own disaster plans for emergencies is not only fitting but a great first step to take in a time while the town of Moore is still assessing damage and is not equipped to take in-kind donations.
