Happy Mardi Gras!

This week, people all over the world, especially in New Orleans, Louisiana celebrate Mardi Gras. In my twenties, I lived in New Orleans and celebrated Mardi Gras firsthand--as a "local." I worked as a clairvoyant, reading tarot cards in psychic shops and Jackson Square while also running my own psychic business investigating cases of "haunted" houses.
 
I was immersed in the spiritual culture of New Orleans. I discovered that the Mardi Gras Celebration, (which begins a week before the actual day), was the highlight of my experiences there. Today, I reflect on the lessons I learned and share them as practices that can be applied every day of the year. 
 
The Spiritual Lessons of Mardi Gras:  
 
1) Celebrate your body.  The revelry and costumes were focused on amusement and playfulness. Put your attention on being amused and playful. "Let the Good Times Roll!" 
 
2) Don't take yourself too seriously. The goal of Mardi Gras is to Lighten Up -- find your cheer and joy in living. At least once a day, find a way to disrupt your regular habits and thoughts -- choose a crazy dance or movement.  
 
3) Use a mask to detach and become the observer. Parts of the ceremonies require celebrants to wear a mask and become anonymous. Periodically, "step back" from conversations and situations in your life and imagine staying behind a mask -- watching as an observer rather than being so involved.
 
4) Be excited about receiving. I became obsessed with receiving  "throws" off the floats in the parades and from other celebrants-including strings of plastic beads of all colors and plastic-metallic coins called doubloons. 
Be in a state of expectancy to receive surprise gifts. No gift is too small -- a penny on the street is a "gift from the Universe."
