Medicare Turns 50
A look back at this "new" federal health care program in 1965
An article that originally appeared in the July 26, 1965 edition of U.S. News & World Report features Dr. Ray E. Trussell, former head of New York City's hospitals, discussing his forecast for what lies ahead for American health care following the creation of a new federal initiative called Medicare. Interestingly, Dr. Trussell states that "If it's run right, the home-care service will be an extension of the hospital system itself", a scenario that is playing out in today's accountable care organizations.
