Long-Time Hospice Medical Director Retires

Patrick Flamion, MD has retired as Deaconess VNA Plus's Hospice Medical

Dr. Flamion chats with Sister Jennifer Miller, Spiritual Care Coordinator, at his retirement reception late last month.

Director for Evansville, including the inpatient John and Betty Charlier Hospice Center, a position he has held since the inception of VNA's hospice program nearly 25 years ago.

Stated Cindi Wessel, Director of Home Care and Hospice Operations, "Dr. Flamion has been instrumental in leading our hospice, supporting the growth and the future of the hospice program. He did not hesitate to oversee and provide direct care for our hospice patients when we opened the John and Betty Charlier Center.  His dedication and commitment to patients and families is obvious with every contact. He never hesitated to have those difficult conversations with the patients and families, helping them understand what was happening and what they could expect. He addressed each and every one with compassion and caring." Cindi also thanks Dr. Flamion's wife, Janice, noting, "We appreciate her patience and understanding and the sharing of her husband with us whenever we called!"

We welcome Dr. Douglas Hatler, who has graciously stepped into the role of Hospice Medical Director. Dr. Hatler was involved with the Deaconess Hospice program for many years and also serves on the Deaconess Hospital Medical Ethics Committee, a testament to his integrity and belief in treating each patient with dignity, empathy and respect.

Openings for volunteers available in several areas

In our Hospice program, volunteers are vital members of the health care team that assist individuals and families by providing companionship, performing light household chores, and providing respite for family caregivers. Volunteers are also welcome in the offices throughout our service area to help with general clerical duties; or to answer phones in the John and Betty Charlier Hospice Center located in Evansville, Indiana. Extensive training is provided, and all volunteers are supervised by Tina Hale, Volunteer Coordinator.
