Collaborative Focus on Student Achievement

Thank you to our recent donors!

We are grateful for Boeing's recent grant that focuses on student achievement through increasing the number of teachers who have completed the National Math Science Initiative (NMSI) training in schools across Madison County.

"Boeing is proud to support programs that focus on teacher development so that they are better prepared to support lifelong learning from birth through post-secondary training," said Tina Watts, community investor for Boeing's Global Corporate Citizenship organization in Huntsville. "We want to help improve not only the rigor of what a student learns but, more importantly, how they learn and apply that knowledge in real and relevant ways."

The effort to engage in collaborative training began with the successful A+ College Ready training program with Huntsville City, Madison City and Madison County High Schools.  The districts expressed interest in providing training to early-learning teachers that could help build the pipeline of students who are ready for the more rigorous levels of Advanced Placement courses.  Teachers in the program are assigned to specific training modules based on their subjects and grade levels taught. All NMSI modules include clear learner outcomes that hold teachers to a high standard, both in terms of their own learning and their ability to help their students master the same knowledge and skills.

Local districts have invested in the training as have the following corporate partners: Wells Fargo, FirstBank, Aerojet, Toyota, and The Daniel Foundation. The continued financial contribution toward this collaborative training program, is a testament to the success of the training and the benefit it has on student achievement.

The Alabama GRIT team is encouraged that parents and others interested in learning more about the state's mathematics" and English standards can visit the Standards Review website today through the week of December 15, 2014 to offer feedback by grade.  Each week, standards for each grade are available for review and comment, beginning with Kindergarten.

"What if assessment was used to promote learning, not just measure it?" - Ron Berger

At the October 21 PSN Session, educational leaders met at Dynetics.  They had the opportunity to get a FREE Professional Digital Headshot, compliments of McMachern Photography.  Dr. Alan Cosby, Etowah County Superintendent, provided a Good News Story from his district while Dr. Dee Fowler, SSA President and Madison City Schools Superintendent, delivered an update from Montgomery.

The Key Note was provided by Ron Berger, author of Leaders of Their Own Learning, the guiding text for the Alabama Best Practices Center's school network, Powerful Conversations. This session is provided through collaboration with Cathy W. Gassenheimer, Executive Vice President for the Alabama Best Practices Center, A+ Education Partnership.  We had another stellar day of professional learning and look forward to sharing more with you soon!
