Lent: Go to the Wilderness
Blessings to You!

Today we begin the season of Lent, which is based on Jesus' 40 days in the wilderness before starting his ministry. During the three years that followed, he gave a teaching that turned the world upside down. The time He spent in the wilderness, away from the influence and distraction of the world He lived in, was critical to his ability to have the strength and stamina to do this incredible feat.

So often in our lives we feel we are under pressure to perform; such pressure in fact that we do not allow ourselves time for sufficient preparation. I am not speaking of financial, educational or technical preparation, but spiritual preparation. Maybe this is the reason why we have not connected with the purpose and meaning for our lives.

I invite you to take this time of lent to "go to the wilderness," to find a quiet place to shut out the distractions and influence of the world around you, to pray and prepare for that which is yours to do. You may not even know what that "looks like" yet, but don't let that stop you. Whether or not you do the whole 40 days, do what you can. You may not be planning on giving the world a teaching that will turn it upside down, but don't let that keep you from what you ARE here to do.

Decide on a time and place. Whether 10 minutes, or an hour, find a time that works for you. As for the place; where is the "wilderness?" Any place you can find where there is peace and quiet. It could be at home, a church, or a park, or retreat center. If it is at home, be sure to help make it a 'wilderness' by assuring the phone, cell phone, computer, and any other distraction has been silenced or removed.

In the wilderness, the most important thing you can do is BE; be alone with God; Spirit. Open your mind and heart to receive inspiration and guidance. You may be tested, as Jesus was,  and like Jesus, when you are grounded spiritually you will come out stronger and ready for what comes next.

The caterpillar spins its chrysalis. Within it, the miracle of metamorphosis happens, giving it beautiful wings to fly, turning it into a butterfly...the symbol of resurrection. Likewise, you can spin yourself a cozy cocoon in which to sprout your spiritual wings, flying to new heights and experiencing new life at Eastertide.

Have a blessed day, RevAli
