Mitchel Howe
Military Teen Panel
I am now graduating from high school this year and my future plans hold a career in Active Duty Military. I will either be a Cavalry Scout in the Army or possibly a P Tech in the Air force. Whatever the future holds for me I can always look back and enjoy the years I spent bringing MN military teens together. I have been on the Teen Panel 4 years. |
Becca Sorlien-Riewer
Military Teen Panel
I am a senior at Frazee High School.
My step-dad, 3 grandpas, and 6 uncles have all been or are currently involved in various branches of the military; I also have/had many friends and family friends in the military.
I wanted to be on the Teen Panel so that I could meet and interact with others military kids and also so I can make a difference in the world.

Month of the Military Child |
April is Month of The Military Child and a time to honor our "Hidden Heroes", military-connected youth and teens. There are several ways you can celebrate Month of the Military Child.
- This year there will be two contests to showcase Minnesota's youth and teens.
- Art Contest open to all military youth of currently serving, retired military personnel and siblings of currently serving military personnel. The artwork has to highlight the life of a military child by answering the question "What does Military life look like to you?" It is not limited to an 8.5" by 11" piece of paper. Submissions are due to Laura Groeneweg by April 30th. There are 4 age categories, K-2nd, 3rd-5th, 6th-8th and 9th-12th grades and prizes will be awarded to the top winner in each category.
- Senator Franken's Annual Poetry Contest for children of military families. Poems have a maximum word count of 250 word
- April 15th is "Purple Up!" day. Everyone is encouraged to wear purple to show their support for ALL military connected youth. Encourage your co-workers, class, and other organizations to wear purple this day.
- Military Families can request a letter from Governor Dayton recognizing their sacrifices of being part of a military family. To request letters go to www.MinnesotaVeteran.org. The link will be live April 1-30.
- Several libraries throughout the state will be hosting a military reading hour. Check your local library for more information.

The Teen Summit 2014
The Teen Summit is when a group of military teens come together and make great friends, while learning about the different aspects of the military, leadership and teamwork. At The Summit we have workshops, a community service projects, a social outing and have lots of fun.
This year will be the fourth Teen Summit, and it has gotten better every year! We look forward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones. This year's theme is "Ohana", meaning family in Hawaiian. See you at the Summit, June 22-24 in Chaska.

What Makes a Good Leader? |
As members of The MN Teen Panel, we discussed in a small group what makes a leader. As a leader you have to be willing to take chances. You also have to be confident, polite, outgoing and positive. Having good morals, good ethics, and good integrity is a must. Finally, a good leader doesn't demand respect they earn it. We had a guest speaker SFC Erik Holtan come and talk to us about leadership and how to be a leader. He taught us about TLP's (Troop Leading Procedure), which we turned in to Teen Leading Procedure. All in all, we learned it takes a lot to be a leader.
