Home Depot crew rebuilds SM's deck
|
While deployed to Shindand Airbase, Afghanistan, in 2012, Sgt. Maj. Juan Esquivel's wife, Julie, was coordinating a one-of-a-kind welcome home present with the help of a few volunteers from two local Home Depot stores.
That present, the complete reconstruction of the couple's deck at their home in Oakdale, was intended to be ready for Juan's homecoming in June 2013. After Julie heard through her local Family Assistance Center that Home Depot was looking for homes to work on, she immediately applied. Representatives from the Woodbury and Hudson Home Depot stores contacted her back right away. However, the homecoming present wouldn't come to fruition until Juan, now a production control non-commissioned officer at Army Aviation Support Facility #1, returned home.
"One day, volunteers from Home Depot contacted me to say, 'Hey, we're back on track to do this deck build,'" Juan said. "Then they just showed up one day, took some measurements, got the permits through the city and said, 'tomorrow we're going to make this happen.'"
As promised, the next day 10 volunteers with Home Depot, all of them veterans, showed up to rebuild the family's deck as a show of appreciation for Juan's service.
"It was hard for me to stand there and watch them work," Juan said. "So I went the extra mile and cooked them all steaks, made some salsa and treated them pretty good.
"The time and effort is what got me," Juan said. "And my wife putting in the work to make it happen."

By: Bill Hudson, WCCO
The former resident at 136 Shadywood Lane in Delano, Minn., was a victim of the nation's housing collapse.
Now, this once bank-owned property is a proud symbol of recovery, as it was the first Minnesota home donated to Operation Homefront's Homes for Veterans program.
The program is designed to help America's most deserving and needy veterans with home ownership.
Sgt. Jeremy Aebly spent five years in active duty and deployment to Kuwait during Operation Iraqi Freedom. When the couple signed up for the "Homes on the Homefront" program, they never dreamed of a mortgage-free home.
"It's such a huge blessing," he said ...
