Summer Savings Drive aims to fix finances
|
Throughout June, Military Saves, a partner in the Department of Defense's Financial Readiness Campaign to motivate, support and encourage military families to save money and build wealth, is rolling out its National Guard Summer Savings Drive 2013. The Savings Drive, which highlights a different savings strategy each week, is focused on helping Guard families assess their savings progress and eliminate debt.
Lisa McLain-Sharp, military personal financial coordinator with Deployment Cycle Support, said the timing of the drive is perfect to help reverse some of the troubling trends seen in the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority's latest Financial Capability Study. According to the study, 61 percent of Soldiers and Airmen spend more than they make, 22 percent have unpaid medical bills and 55 percent have no emergency savings.
"It's sad because people are working hard for their money, but their money is not working for them," said McLain-Sharp. "With the Summer Savings Drive, we're trying to get people to set a goal, make a plan and reverse these trends.
"If people find themselves on the wrong side of one these statistics, a personal financial counselor is a phone call away."
