Vietnam Vet honored with 'welcome home'
  By: Boyd Huppert
Kare 11 News

A decorated Marine combat pilot returned to a hero's welcome Tuesday night, but Bill Isaacson wasn't coming home from Iraq or Afghanistan. He served nearly 50 years ago in Vietnam.

Isaacson's friends planned the surprise upon his return from his winter retreat in Florida. They managed to keep the parade from Lakeland to Afton a secret. Isaacson first realized something was up when the van he was riding in pulled up to a fire truck and several dozen motorcycles waiting to escort him into town.

"The people never got to get together as a group when he came home and meet him at the airport or have a little celebration at home. He just came home and was out of the military," said Dick Glasgow, who helped plan the welcome.

The power of a chair

By: Kelly Grinsteinner

Hibbing Daily Tribune

For Steven Fulton to walk a few feet on his own fruition is a major feat.

The 30-year-old sustained a severe back injury while performing a training exercise in the Army.

That was roughly five years ago, and despite subsequent surgeries, he's still in pain.

"I'm in constant pain, and have been since I was hurt," said Fulton, who currently resides with his fiancé, Kalyn Anselm, and their 10 month-old son, Steven Jr. "They said it's permanent and that it will get worse."

Fulton was given a new lease of life this spring when the collaborative efforts of three Beyond the Yellow Ribbon groups resulted in the gifting of a power wheelchair.

Twins recognize Blaine YR Network

The Minnesota Twins recognized four volunteers from the Blaine Yellow Ribbon Network at Target Field on April 26. During a recognition ceremony at home plate, the following was read:

"Throughout this season, the Twins will recognize Yellow Ribbon Networks that go above and beyond in supporting Servicemembers and their families.

"Tonight, we are recognizing Blaine's Yellow Ribbon Network. Their network was established in April 2011 and they received the Governor's Yellow Ribbon Proclamation recognition in 2012. Approximately 45 people are involved in their network. They recently partnered with Blaine's Sergeant John Rice VFW and held a job fair to support unemployed veterans with finding jobs with local Blaine businesses. They banded together with the Cambridge Yellow Ribbon Network and adopted the recently deployed 850th Horizontal Engineer Company. This network has been involved in everything from home repairs to assisting in snow removal and yard cleanup."
