Army captain with BTYR ties lands job

Capt. Michael Obach was recently hired as the public affairs coordinator for the Home Builders Association of Fargo-Moorhead. Before that, Obach was working as the local military representative for the area's network - work that ultimately led to him being recommended for the position.

"I can't say I used the 3-Step process," Obach said. "Indirectly, however, it was through the Yellow Ribbon Network that I came to be hired."

Before Obach was hired, he was - in a temporary but official capacity - helping Beyond the Yellow Ribbon of Moorhead move forward with its strong focus on getting local Servicemembers employed. Part of his work was to help plan a job fair by coordinating with the Fargo Chamber of Commerce and have them help support the event. He was also able to find a few local businesses to send representatives to the fair and offer information on resume writing and interview preparation.

"Once my orders were complete, I told the committee I would still help and attend the network's meetings - just not in an official capacity," Obach said. "Once I left for my next military school, they wanted to help me find employment."

While Obach was completing his captain's career course at Fort Benning, Ga., he was contacted by a representative from the HBA.

"They actually reached out to me, they said that I had been referred by the folks I was working with up north," Obach said. "They allowed me to interview for and apply to a position that had been closed."

Obach is originally from South Heart, N.D., and has been in the Army National Guard for 16 years. On the military side, he works as an operations officer with the 34th Infantry Division.

Obach is encouraging job-seeking Servicemembers in the northwest region of the state to contact him for entry-level construction and low-level management positions at 701-306-1664.

- The ideal method for job-seeking Servicemembers to find employment is to network and utilize the 3-Step process.
