FRG's March Volunteer of the Month
|
by Jan Fournier,
Senior Family Readiness Support Assistant
Kim Hite is the Family Readiness Group co-leader for A Co., 2nd Battalion, 147th Assault Helicopter Battlion, out of St. Paul. Kim took on the role during her husband's second deployment (she was previously the FRG leader for his first deployment in 2008-09 with D. Co., 2-147). Kim believes in the FRG program and displays it in her actions with her fellow family members. She has planned meetings and researched creative events for the families, including a memorable meeting held at the zoo and a free photo booth and photographer for a battalion event. Additionally, Kim sends out email communications to the families and is a phone-tree caller.
Kim has great compassion for the families she works with. The families, in turn, trust her and know they can come to her for information or to just talk. Through her listening skills and research and resource abilities she has empowered her families to be self-reliant and resilient. We are fortunate to have her as part of the FRG team!
Do you know a deserving volunteer? Nominate them at www.BeyondTheYellowRibbon.org/volunteer-of-the-month.

Protect your identity - and the planet
|
by Lisa McLain Sharp
Personal Financial Counselor
Everyone knows about reusing shopping bags and recycling whatever material, whenever possible, but are you taking advantage of some habits that will save you money, help the environment and protect your identity? Here's three tips to get you started:
1) Sign up for paperless statements and e-billing. This prevents would-be thieves from stealing your identity by stealing your mail.
2) Invest in a cross-cut shredder. Use the shredded paper as mulch in your garden or add it to your compost pile.
3) Get to know your apps. Some banks now have applications for smartphones and tablets that allow people to deposit checks by snapping a photo of the front and the back (with endorsement). This saves time, money and the fuel costs of driving to your bank or ATM machine. After taking a photo of the check, the check becomes void and can be filed or destroyed.
For more money, time and planet saving tips, contact your Personal Financial Counselor, Lisa McLain-Sharp, at 651-282-4230 or by email at lmclain-sharp@mflc.zeiders.com.

Community Thanks Vet through Remodel
|

by Kate Renner,
KSTP
Staff Sergeant Brian Martin says he gets a lot of thanks for his military service. Martin toured in Iraq from 2005-2007, and is a member of the Army National Guard.
But [March 7th's] thank you isn't said in words, but said through the chisel
of a hammer.
Martin's bathroom is getting remodeled by Home Depot Crews and the Brooklyn Park chapter of Beyond the Yellow Ribbon.
Volunteers are replacing the vanity, the tile on the walls and updating all
the hardware. Martin says these kind actions shows him how much his service is still appreciated.
The local Yellow Ribbon chapter wrote up a grant to remodel Martin's bathroom, and the local Home Depot signed on, donating $5,000 in
supplies and man power to get it done all in one day.
