Jessica Pauszek wins Mary Hatch Marshall Award
Jessica Pauszek
Jessica Pauszek, a Ph.D. candidate in composition and cultural rhetoric in the Writing Program in the College of Arts and Sciences, has been selected to receive this year's Mary Hatch Marshall Essay Award, an annual award for the best essay by a graduate student in the humanities at Syracuse University. Pauszek's essay is entitled "When Some Members Can't Write: Building Alternative Educational Spaces From the Ground Up". She is a native of Dunkirk, NY, and Deltona, Fla.

The annual award honors Mary Hatch Marshall, the first woman to achieve the rank of full professor in the College of Liberal Arts. She held the Jesse Truesdell Peck Chair in English literature, served as the first director of the Honors Program and was among the founding members of Library Associates.

Students from African American Studies; Art & Music Histories; English; Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics; Latino-Latin American Studies; Religion; Philosophy; the Writing Program; and the Women's and Gender Studies Program are eligible for the award.

Library Associates established the annual award to honor and help perpetuate Mary Hatch Marshall's scholarly standards and generous spirit. Members of Library Associates, Marshall's friends and family, the Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation, and the Central New York Community Foundation all contributed to the endowment established in 2004 that funds the award.

Happy anniversary, Sound Beat!
Happy anniversary, Sound Beat!
Jim O_Connor and Brett Barry

On Friday, May 6, we celebrated the fifth anniversary of Sound Beat in Bird Library's Learning Commons... with cake! On hand for the event was the show's host Brett Barry, a two-time Newhouse alumnus and voiceover artist, and producer Jim O'Connor.

Coverage of the show has grown steadily and Sound Beat can now be heard on over 359 stations from coast to coast, including Canada, and as far away as the Philippines, reaching over 5 million listeners. Stations that carry the show include WAMC/Northeast Public Radio and Jefferson Public Radio, (Pacific Northwest), each with over 1 million listeners, Texas Public Radio, and AMI, a Canadian reader service delivered via cable to five million households.

Accessibility tips and tricks
Accessibility tips and tricks
When creating a hyperlink on the web, in a document or in an email, be sure that the link destination is clear to the user. Screen readers like JAWS will often read available links aloud to the user, so links like "click here" or "visit this page" are not helpful, nor is a long URL string. Even sighted users will appreciate knowing the link destination before they click on it.

Instead, try to hyperlink the name of the page to which you are linking, for example:

The Insert Hyperlink dialog box in most MS Office applications will let you easily change the text that displays for a hyperlink.

Wet book rescue

Wet book rescue

In honor of Preservation Week (April 24-30), the Preservation Department created an informational video on how to rescue a book that has been water damaged, featuring a couple of our library staff and our own work-study students.Special thanks to Sarah Kim, Preservation Technical Specialist, for all of her hard work.

As a research library, we are proud to raise awareness of the importance of preserving our collections, so we are passing along a fun tutorial on what to do when your book gets wet. This video was also posted on the Syracuse University Libraries Facebook Page so please, like, comment, and share!

Tell Us What You Think!
SU students continue to comment about the Libraries using social media outlets, such as Twitter and Facebook. Many of their musings receive a reply from the Library's official Twitter handle, @SyracuseULib. Here are some of the things that have been on their minds:
  • So apparently you can text @SyracuseULib...? I ran out of chalk and casually was then delivered some... Bird's always got my back
  • Where am I gonna study in Italy 'cause I've never been, but I'm pretty sure they don't have a Panasci Lounge or Bird Library.
  • Bird Library, you have become my home.
  • I'm home, aka Bird Library basement.
  • There are more outlets in a single classroom in @NewhouseSU than there are in all of Bird Library.
  • Some of our LIS students are in Bird Library right now, showcasing their semester projects - stop by and see them! https://t.co/jnd34J9ylh
  • Celebrating the last week of class with blooming magnolias. @ Bird Library-Syracuse University https://t.co/YTGSBwTnRv
  • The inside of Carnegie Library, captured as a 360° photo. Photo by graduate student Vincent DeRise '16. http://goo.gl/IwDxw3
  • Overheard a guy walking by the map room in Bird Library saying "Maps? They still have maps?"
  • Whoa! Shout-out to @SyracuseULib's Human Library event during #LOEX2016!
  • "Ahh, Brutalist," said my dad, an engineer, as he looked at Bird Library with a sigh.
