Holiday Sharing 2014
This year, as part of SU's Holiday Sharing Program, a generous group of staff from our Bird Library family put together a flat-bed full of gifts, groceries, toiletries, laundry detergent, paper products, and gift cards for our our adopted family of eight children and one adult. The University elves will be distributing our collections to the community organizations who provide us with the family information. The Libraries' Holiday Sharing Committee would like to thank you all for helping to make this event a success by taking time from your busy schedules to shop and provide donations to our family.

United Way Fundraiser Extravaganza results
Thank you!!! Once again, we can say the Syracuse University Libraries PARTICIPATED WITH PRIDE in the annual United Way Campaign. After adding together all of our fundraisers, we raised a grand total of over $677 to help those less fortunate in our own community. DeAnn Buss was the lucky employee to win the fourth annual "Libraries Day-Off Donation Giveaway." She will receive one extra full day off with pay during the current fiscal year. Congratulations, DeAnn! May your holidays be even merrier knowing that you helped make these coming days, and the new year, more hopeful for so many members of our community.

Make your Green Days sustainable

Make your Green Days sustainable
Will you be away from your campus office for an extended period during the upcoming Winter Break/Green Days period? If so, before leaving, please do the following: - Turn off and unplug all office and personal electronics such as computers, monitors, printers, paper shredders, coffee makers, bottled water coolers, televisions, chargers, staplers, etc.
- Put your copier and fax machine in "sleep" mode.
- Water or take home plants.
- Close and lock all windows.
- Turn off all office lights on your way out, including decorative and task fixtures.
One easy way to make sure you're not wasting energy is to plug your computer, monitor, printer, and any other peripherals you use into a single power strip. Once your computer is shut down, you can effectively unplug it and all the other pieces by turning off the power strip. That's a lot easier than unplugging everything individually and plugging them back when you return. Just turn the power strip back on and restart the computer. All of these efforts save energy and contribute to SU's Climate Action Plan, the institutional blueprint for becoming carbon neutral. For questions about campus sustainability, contact Steve Lloyd, associate director for sustainability, at salloyd@syr.edu or 443-4993.

Comments and complaints from the Interwebs
Almost every day, SU students comment and complain about the Library using social media outlets, such as Twitter and Facebook. Many of their musings receive a reply from the Library's official Twitter handle, @SyracuseULib. Here are some of the things that have been on their minds:- Bird Library ... my home until Dec 17th. #finals
- It's about to be a long day spent in Bird Library.
- Guess who's got a date with my schoolwork at Bird Library? Me! #finalsweek #nerd
- Kid in the Bird Library cafe is talking to himself and not wearing socks or shoes. Finals are clearly dominating him.
- 3:30 a.m., Bird Library, doing what needs to be done.
- Stayed at Bird Library from 4:45 p.m. yesterday to 5:15 a.m. this morning.
- Missing Bird Library. #finalsaintthesame
- Now begins my study of which library is worse during finals: Bird Library or law school #moneysonclubbird
- It takes longer to find a place to study at Bird Library than actually studying for finals. #doesntmakesense
- Dementors were roaming around Bird Library this week sucking the souls out of students.
- That sad moment when I realize I can't do work any other place other than Bird Library.
- To be honest, if there were a way for me to land IN Bird Library instead of Hancock Airport it would save me loads of time.
- Wearing ear plugs in the library: WHY DIDN'T I DO THIS AT BIRD LIBRARY?! HIGHLY recommend to everyone!!!
- Airports remind me of Bird Library. Need an outlet. Can't get an outlet.
- Why is Bird Library 100 degrees? #BirdSauna
- The upper floors are too cold.
- Bird Library is too bright to study.
- Please clean the private study rooms.
- The first floor of Bird Library looks like the Cold War and IKEA had a baby.
- There is no coffee more disgusting than Bird Library coffee.
- Starbucks should deliver to @SyracuseULib during finals week. That is all.
