gold medal It is with great pleasure that we announce this year's Distinguished Service Award recipients. The panel has selected two winners: Nicolette A. Dobrowolski, Head of Public Services and Reference Librarian for the Special Collections Research Center, and Bill Vogel, Library Technician in Access & Resource Sharing. The Distinguished Service Award recognizes Libraries staff who have made a significant contribution to the user community.

We hope you will all give a hearty congratulations when you see Nicolette and Bill and join us for the presentation at the Library Holiday Party and Recognition Event on Friday, December 12.

Thank you to the DSA Committee (Shannon Pritting (chair), Tasha Cooper, Patrick Midtlyng, Sophie Rondeau, and Stephen Singer) for their work in organizing this effort.

2014 United Way Campaign activities
2014 United Way Campaign activities

On Tuesday, November 4, the Libraries held its annual United Way Election Day Bake Sale in the Learning Commons. In just a few short hours, we raised $125 as part of our gift to the CNY community.

Don't forget to mark your calendar for the annual United Way Fundraiser Extravaganza on Friday, December 12 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Peter Graham Scholarly Commons. Contributors may drop off donations -- handmade items, art work, white elephant, theme basket/clever container, and other items -- between now and 3 p.m. on Thursday, December 11 to any team member (Pat Hunt, Nancy Cohen, Matt Reschke, Penelope Singer).

And last, but certainly not least... don't you wish you could have another day off? Well, you can! Back by popular demand: A Library Day-Off Donation Giveaway! Donation tickets will be available starting Monday, December 8 in the Business Office for just $5.00 each through noon on Friday, December 12. Remember, each $5.00 donation you make increases your chance for a bonus day off!

Thank you for supporting our community through your participation in the Libraries' United Way activities. Please consider making a contribution by filling out your pledge card -- one gifts helps supports a network of health and human service programs. Giving to a favorite charity through the United Way is a win-win for both organizations.

Holiday Sharing 2014
Holiday Sharing 2014

The Libraries have once again signed on to participate in the Holiday Sharing Program. Started in 1991, Holiday Sharing is a voluntary program organized by volunteers around campus that pairs SU schools, colleges, and departments with families who need a little extra help. We have a wonderful team of library helpers who are working to keep us organized.

This year, our family has eight children -- seven boys (ages 19, 14, 11, 8, 6, 4 and 1), one girl (age 14), and one (female) adult.

There are several ways that you can participate in the Holiday Sharing program:
  • Choose an ornament from the "giving tree" (located in the staff lounge on the lower level of Bird Library), buy the gift listed on the label, and attach the tag to the gift. Remember, please don't wrap the gift.
  • Help to stock the family's pantry by donating non-perishables or health and household items
  • Donate cash to purchase any gifts that were not selected, gift cards, and additional pantry items.
For questions about gift specifics, contact Marianne Hanley. Remember that the gift suggestions come from the families and are "wish lists" -- do not think that all gifts listed must be purchased or are expected.

Bring your UNWRAPPED gifts, non-perishables, health and household items, and cash to the Business Office by Wednesday, December 10. Pickup and delivery of all donations takes place on two mornings in December, usually several days before Christmas.

All of this information, and much more, can be found on our Holiday Family Sharing blog.

Tell Us What You Think!
Almost every day, SU students comment and complain about the Library using social media outlets, such as Twitter and Facebook. Many of their musings receive a reply from the Library's official Twitter handle, @SyracuseULib. Here are some of the things that have been on their minds:
  • The 6th floor of Bird Library at SU is a hidden gem! It has archives of victims on Pan Am Flight 103. More on it later on NCCNews. #B4641
  • I only have 14% worth of homework left for tonight... thanks to there not being any outlets in Bird Library.
  • @SyracuseULib next time you try and rebuild Bird Library maybe put a few more outlets near the tables.
  • The fact that the computers in Bird library shut down and only saved half of my work... blows!
  • Stop closing floors at midnight!
  • Shout out to the SU library that has about around five academic responses to a book, but doesn't actually have the book itself.
  • I love you SU Library services, but must you do maintenance while I have to do footnotes?
  • As the sun rises, the first of the early Bird Library goers walks in. #theworstfeeling
  • 75% of my time has been at Bird Library lately.
  • After 14 consecutive hours (time in: 8:15pm, time out 10:15am) in Bird Library I am delighted to announce my project is completed.
  • Yup, back in my second home. SU Library.
  • ATTENTION! LOST: My sanity. IF FOUND: Return to basement of Bird Library plz n thnk u.
  • Went to Bird Library to write a paper but I'm just people watching... #struggle
  • Bird Library = basic hangout for undergrads. Yet here I am... #ifyouseemedontsayhi #soashamed
  • SOS in desperate need of vanilla milkshake--report to Bird Library second floor.
  • Walking around the Vinyl section of Bird Library waiting for Mean Streets to rewind because they only had it on VHS. Feels good.
  • Why does the SU Library have films on VHS? You really think kids have a VHS player in their dorm? Yea.
  • My school library just approved the purchase of the latest from @scalzi and @GreatDismal woohoo!!!!! @SyracuseULib
  • Spotted the age old tale of forlorn love from India. It's being showcased as one of the @SyracuseULib #homeandaway pic.twitter.com/6RH8a89qXf
  • Playing my headphones so loud in Bird secretly wishing someone stands up dancing and then the whole library turns into a flash mob.
  • Via @SUFoundRelations: Big thanks to Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation for their grant to @SyracuseULib to preserve historic recordings bit.ly/1oWCL9w
  • It's crazy to think that while I'm here at Bird Library at 3:50am, students at a FSU library were attacked by a coward. #PrayForFSU
