Exhibit featuring Margaret Bourke-White opens
Syracuse University Libraries' fall exhibition Context: Reading the Photography of Margaret Bourke-White opened on August 19. Curated by Special Collections Senior Director Sean Quimby, this exhibition explores how text "framed" the photography of Margaret Bourke-White and, ultimately, how she sought to transcend the limits of the medium that made her famous. The exhibition will run until January 16, 2015. Simultaneously, SUArt Galleries is presenting a complementary exhibition Margaret Bourke-White: Moments in History 1930-1945, curated by Oliva Maria Rubio of La Fábrica (Madrid, Spain) and on view until October 19. Syracuse is the final stop on the world-wide exhibition tour for Moments in History, which has appeared in Berlin, Copenhagen, Munich, and the Hague. Read more »

Students in summer programs search for mascot at Library game night
Around the world and around the library with Otto! Where did Otto the Orange go on his summer vacation? That's what 15 SummerStart students attempted to find out on Friday night, August 1 at a special event in Bird Library. Students worked in teams to complete a crossword puzzle with questions relating to different countries that Otto visited in his travels (or at least the countries we imagined he might visit). Students found answers using online articles, books, print journals/magazines, maps, and other resources located in Bird Library. The first two groups to complete the puzzle with the correct answers received a bonus clue leading to Otto's final vacation spot. Then, the first group to find the answer to this last question and return with a final hidden piece of paper containing Otto's picture received the grand prize of Insomnia Cookies or pizza. Additional prizes of movie tickets and SU swag were also given to the second and third place winners, and all participating students were treated to a large assortment of food and drink throughout the evening. While hunting for the answers, students ran around the second, third and fourth floors of Bird Library, some in concentrated packs while others split up the questions and reconvened at intervals to check results. They followed Otto as he rolled his way across six continents and 20countries, including Singapore, India, Switzerland, Venezuela, and Botswana. Students learned about a variety of travel destinations, historical facts, and world cultures. The winning teams were extremely excited and energetic throughout the event. It was easy to see who might finish the activity quickly and win! Thank you to everyone who helped to make this special event a success: - Summer @ Syracuse for providing the refreshments and prizes.
- Libraries staff who volunteered to provide assistance to students and make sure the event went smoothly: Tarida Anantachai, Barbara Jackson, Neyda Gilman, Fantasia Thorne-Ortiz, and Richard Ortiz.
- SummerStart and Summer College RAs who assisted with the activity.
Curious as to where Otto traveled? Email Abby Kasowitz-Scheer for a copy of the crossword puzzle.

Green Team talks recycling with OCRAA, SU Sustainability
On Tuesday, July 29 a large group gathered for a Green Team brown bag on recycling with guests Theresa Mandery, Recycling Specialist at Onondaga County Resource Recovery Agency (OCRRA) and Melissa Cadwell, Marketing Manager for SU's Sustainability Division. Theresa kicked off the talk with a discussion of the waste management hierarchy. The hierarchy places emphasis on reducing, reusing, and recycling the majority of wastes which forms the basis of waste management.
She noted that 62 percent of the trash in Onondaga County was recycled last year or approximately 575,000 tons! Theresa reported that commercial recycling is the highest in the county and that county wide, there has been a 47 percent reduction in waste, with 15 percent of Onondaga County homes being powered by trash. Future efforts include continuation of county-wide education efforts and the promotion of composting.
Melissa Cadwell told the group about Enactus, a program started by students from Whitman. These students set up a program with the Rescue Mission that provides for a portion of the profit from SU's returnables to be used for meals. 65 cans are needed to provide one meal. So far, this program has helped to provide 2,300 meals at the Rescue Mission in Syracuse. Melissa went on to report that SU had 475 tons of food waste last year and that SU is switching to mixed recycling during the fall semester and will be replacing existing recycling containers campus wide. She also reported that SU placed 34th in the Per Capita Classic category of this spring's RecycleMania competition with a 24.485 pound per capita recycling rate. SU is an active composting participant campus wide. For more information about recycling, contact Theresa Mandery at 315-295-0732 or tmandery@ocrra.org. And, for more information about SU's efforts visit the Sustainability in Action website.

Comments and complaints from the Interwebs
Almost every day, SU students comment and complain about the Library using social media outlets, such as Twitter and Facebook. Many of their musings receive a reply from the Library's official Twitter handle, @SyracuseULib or the Learning Commons (@sulibrarylc). Here are some of the things that have been on their minds:
- Bird Library reminds me of Robarts Library at the University of Toronto: bit.ly/1nWx5oZ
- Shout out to @SyracuseULib and their awesome website for making my life 1000x easier with this research project this summer.
- Bird Library will be your best friend. They have everything, even books on how to use the bathroom!
- Bird Library is resourceful. I like the study rooms.
- Nice library. Leaving tomorrow and will miss it!
- Such lovely people greeting us at Pages Patio Café.
- Syracuse University ranks as no. 1 party school... but in my defense, I spent equal amounts of time at #BirdLibrary and at the frats/bars.
- R.I.P. first floor and my sofa and window.
- I used to love the first floor.
- I want to see what's behind the construction! It will look fantastic when you're all done... and way better than before!
- When does the construction finish? I miss the other chairs.
- Bird Library be looking #flawless with this new cosmetic makeover.
- Asbestos found in the carpets of Bird Library? #ReallyWantedToStudyInTheLibrary
- Basement of Bird Library is closed until January. Now how will all of Syracuse Greek life pretend to study? #cuseprobs
- I love these printers--they are very fast and user friendly.
- We need more PCs here!
- A heads up on the window washing schedule would be awesome so that cyclists don't get stuck without a bike!
