SUL featured on list of vital university library websites

The website of Syracuse University Libraries has received international recognition for the outstanding service it provides to students, researchers, and the public.

The site is among those listed in a new compilation of the best university library websites from around the world, published by the Online PhD Program. The Libraries' website is commended for having an impressive display of content on its front page that highlights notable lecturers, the latest news relating to libraries, recommended databases, in addition to fantastic databases and collections.

Entitled "Reading & Research: 101 Vital University Library Websites", the list features sites that not only provide students with online access to vast digital collections, but also ensure that many of their resources are accessible to the public.

The list, which is not in order of rank, can be viewed on the Online PhD Program website.

Bird After Dark 2014 recap
Bird After Dark 2014 recap
Students playing Baby Blockin'
Our eighth annual "Bird After Dark" was held on Friday, January 31 from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. About 35 undergraduate and graduate students participated in this lively event, sponsored by the Libraries and the Office of Residence Life (ORL).

Participants searched the Libraries' web site, spaces, and stacks to find answers to questions and attempted "Minute to Win It"-style skill challenges such as balancing baby blocks on their partners' heads and assembling puzzles made from cereal boxes.

During breaks, students danced to music, enjoyed refreshments, won raffle prizes, and played games, including Twister. This year, for the first time, students also participated in a service project during the breaks, as they made cards for patients at the Golisano Children's Hospital.

Congratulations to the teams who scored highest and won the grand prizes:
  • First place: Team Ben & Jerry
  • Second place: Team Maxwell Mafia
  • Third place: Team Manpee
Prizes, sponsored by ORL and kept "secret" until the event, included: SONY Bluetooth speakers (first place); a basket of SU items (rugby shirts, foam fingers, etc.) (second place); and a package of school supplies (third place).

Bird After Dark is a team effort that relies on the hard work and talents of many folks in many departments within the Libraries and the Office of Residence Life. Thank you to all SUL staff, LIS students, and ORL staff who helped plan and staff the event.

SU Press featured in Central New York Magazine
The Good Life: CNY Magazine cover Be sure to check out the January/February issue of The Good Life, Central New York Magazine for a wonderful story on the Syracuse University Press.

Also in this issue, Syracuse University professor and novelist George Saunders G'88 appears on the cover and reflects on the whirlwind that was 2013--and ahead to 2014--in an interview with freelance writer Laura Ryan.

If you aren't familiar with the magazine here is some information from their website:

"Central New York Magazine is about the "good life" in our community. The magazine's quality is a reflection of who we are as Central New Yorkers. Each issue celebrates the people and the places that make this region so special as well as the seasons that renew us. Find Central New York Magazine at Wegmans, Barnes and Noble, Rite Aid, Price Chopper and other select retail locations."

RecycleMania
RecycleMania
Syracuse University kicked off its participation in RecycleMania, on February 2. RecycleMania is an eight-week national competition and benchmarking tool for college and university recycling programs to see who can reduce, reuse and recycle the most on-campus waste and promote waste reduction activities to their campus communities.

During the tournament, schools compete in 11 categories to recycle the most on a per capita basis, to decrease the most amount of waste and recycle the largest percentage of their overall waste stream to see who can reduce, reuse and recycle the most on-campus waste. A winner is declared after the competition ends on March 30.

According to SU News, Syracuse University has participated in the benchmarks division in the past -- meaning that SU competed to simply see how the campus would place. But this year, Syracuse has entered as a formal participant in the tournament. The sustainability division is advertising for the tournament in the dining centers and on social media. Updated rankings are published each Friday throughout the competition so schools can track their progress and improve their standings against rival colleges. This year, New York State has more schools competing than any other state.

National recognition is provided to the winning school in each category on the RecycleMania website and in a national press release. Winning schools receive an award made out of recyclable materials, and win the right to host that category's special traveling trophy for the coming year.

All are welcome to help support SU's efforts!

Information about what can be recycled and where is available on the SU Sustainability in Action Recycling and Waste Reduction page and on the SUL's "Greening the Libraries" page.

Tell Us What You Think!
Almost every day, SU students comment and complain about the Library using social media outlets, such as Twitter and Facebook. Many of their musings receive a reply from the Library's official Twitter handle, @SyracuseULib or the Learning Commons (@sulibrarylc). Here are some of the things that have been on their minds:
  • It's unreal how many books Bird Library has on gender roles in the medieval ages.
  • How do you even check a book out of Bird Library? Avoided it for 4 years, now I can't get around it. #SecondSemesterSeniorSlackin
  • I could spend all day in the @SyracuseULib's Archives! Here's a look back at @SyracuseU in 1983. #celebratesu pic.twitter.com/rfFBPgoQe7
  • All of Bird Library just screamed in unison after Tyler Ennis' game-winning 3 pointer. #CuseNation #CusePride
  • There's more people at Bird Library than at the Duke game.
  • I'm fieeending for a power outlet in Bird Library right now. Battery's down to 22% and I got an essay to write. #ClearOut
  • Snow days in Syracuse: the one occasion when you will not have an issue finding a table with an outlet at Bird Library.
  • Someone needs to enforce being quiet on the quiet floors @SyracuseULib.
  • Why are people always playing pan flutes in Bird Library when I'm trying to study?!
  • Chai tea lattes at Pages Cafe are ahhmazing.
  • Dear guy working at the cafe in Bird Library, imma be real with you. You stink at making wraps. Wish you the best for the rest of your shift.
  • @SustainableSU: @SyracuseULib Thanks for letting us table today! Tap water is the winner! And the water taste test was a hit with the patrons.
  • Bird Library #365 grateful for the sleepless nights there.
  • I am a resident of ParkPoint, Victoria Place, Bird Library, Archbold gym, Ernie Davis gym and Whitman. #collegestruggles
  • I just might have to start going to Bird Library more often.
  • Bird Library started checking IDs at the door. #isthisabar #officiallyexclusive
  • Just got denied from Bird Library for using a friend's ID. Looks like I'm sneaking in. #butigohere #nottakingfakeIDs
  • Getting into Bird Library is such an inconvenience. All I want to do is walk through the front door, is that too much to ask for?
  • Bird Library imposes stricter security measures after a recent string of late returns. http://t.co/KxQ2lNUwqz
  • I just walked through the front doors of Carnegie Library. Is this real life?
  • Carnegie Library is my new hideout. Bird is just so last year.
  • Enjoying some quiet time before I teach in SU's Carnegie Library Reading Room. Wonderful. http://t.co/a1JHG9dRQi
  • Excellent job, @SyracuseULib, on renovations of the Carnegie Library Reading Room. Great restoration & enhancement. pic.twitter.com/mTcZtRJA19
  • Proud of my new school for rehabbing the Carnegie Library. This building is going to be a huge asset to @SyracuseU!
  • The New Carnegie Library is like the most beautiful building I've ever been in. I feel like I'm partly in Europe and partly in Hogwarts. http://instagram.com/p/jr-bRUPtqd/ #100daysofhappy
  • Carnegie Library is supposed to be silent, which it is, except the fact there is loud construction going on.
  • To whom it may concern, could you put shades on the windows in room 208 of Carnegie Library? It's so bright that I can't see my computer screen clearly.
  • I'm pretty mad at the person who decided I can't eat or drink in Carnegie Library I have to say.
  • Can students even bring bottle drinks in the reading room? I don't think it's possible to not drink while studying.
