Libraries' listservs
We've compiled a list of Libraries' listservs (that we are aware of) including each listserv name, purpose, owner(s), and members. The document can be found in the Communications Public Documents section of SharePoint here (note that you may need to copy and paste this URL into your browser).
You can also get to it from a link titled "SU Libraries' Listservs" on the Communications web page under the "Key Communications Vehicles" section and on the Staff web page under "Applications and Systems".
If you are aware of another listserv owned by a Libraries' staff member or create one in the future via listserv.syr.edu, please make sure to add lisd@syr.edu as an additional owner and to let Liz Cronkwright know the following details about the listserv: Name, purpose, owner(s), and members.
Thank you for helping us to keep this list up to date.

I-81 project documents available in Bird Library
The Syracuse University Libraries have agreed to be a repository for public documents related to the I-81 Viaduct Project in Syracuse. Environmental Design and Research, a local company involved in the I-81 project, is required by the NYS Dept. of Transportation to arrange for public access to project documents. Documents include the Environmental Impact Statement, project scoping documents, project newsletters, and supporting studies. Project documents are available at the first floor circulation desk in Bird Library, which closes to the public at 8 p.m. during the academic year. In addition to SU, the OCPL system (all branches), the Southwest Community Center, the Northeast Community Center, and many of the municipal offices in Syracuse and Onondaga County are also repositories. To date, the Libraries have received one document, a copy of the Federal Highway Administrations' Notice of Intent to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement for the I-81 Viaduct project. The Libraries will receive additional documents over the course of the project, estimated to be three years.

Electrical work near New Books area
Those who work in Bird may have noticed some work involving PGSC's outside wall.
We're getting four more electrical outlets! We had requested one for a pilot program to advertise electronic news/newspaper holdings. Since workers had to remove two walnut panels to complete the work, it was decided that they add another pair while they were at it, and remove those old TVs.
A standalone (non-networked) computer with a 27" monitor will be placed on top of the print newspaper shelves. The screen will show a continuous loop of slides that illustrate and advertise our vast array of e newspapers and news sources.
Michael Pasqualoni has been working on the slides, in consultation with Tasha Cooper.
We will let you know more on the plan when everything is up and running. If you have any questions or suggestions, please contact Lesley Pease.

2013 United Way Campaign activities
On Tuesday, November 5, the Libraries held its annual United Way Election Day Bake Sale in the Learning Commons. With the help of a few generous donors, several liberal tippers, and a couple of overachievers buying in bulk for their departments, the event surpassed last year's total and, in just a few short hours, raised $166 as part of our gift to the CNY community.
Don't forget to mark your calendar for the annual United Way Auction Extravaganza on Friday, December 6 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Peter Graham Scholarly Commons. Contributors may drop off auction items -- handmade items, art work, white elephant, theme basket/clever container, and silent auctions -- between now and 10 a.m. on Friday, December 6 to any team member (Nancy Cohen, Pat Hunt, Matt Reschke, Penelope Singer).
And last, but certainly not least... don't you wish you could have another day off? Well, you can! Back by popular demand: A Library Day-Off Donation Giveaway! Donation tickets will be available starting Monday, December 2 in the Business Office for just $5.00 each through noon on Friday, December 6. Remember, each $5.00 donation you make increases your chance for a bonus day off!
Thank you for supporting our community through your participation in the Libraries' United Way activities. Please consider making a contribution by filling out your pledge card -- one gifts helps supports a network of health and human service programs. Giving to a favorite charity through the United Way is a win-win for both organizations.

Food for Fines
On Thursday, November 14, the libraries of SU and SUNY-ESF participated in a "Food for Fines" amnesty day by collecting food for the needy and offering patrons the opportunity to reduce their overdue fines. A total of 387 non-perishable items were collected and donated to the Cathedral Emergency Services food pantry in downtown Syracuse.
Participating libraries include Bird, the Carnegie Library, the Geology Library, the Barclay Law Library, the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, the Architecture Reading Room, and ESF's Moon Library.
The program will be held again in the spring.

Green Team news
Access & Resource Sharing making green efforts
In order to provide better, faster, and more efficient service while using fewer resources, Interlibrary Loan, which typically uses over 50,000 sheets of paper annually, has found a way to save money and use no new paper for almost an entire year. Changes include:
- Modifying printouts to maximize the number of printouts per sheet -- a savings of at least 18,000 sheets of paper per year;
- Working with Preservation to create custom ILL label paper that maximize every inch of a full sheet of paper with no cutting;
- Printing on old paper, second sheets, and stationery with old logo/wordmark that was being previously used for "scrap paper" or recycled;
- Only printing in black and white to save significant toner cartridge costs.
Watch for an announcement about a Green Team tour of the Green Data Center in early December.

Holiday Sharing 2013
The Libraries have once again signed on to participate in the Holiday Sharing Program. Started in 1991, Holiday Sharing is a voluntary program organized by volunteers around campus that pairs SU schools, colleges, and departments with families who need a little extra help. We have a wonderful team of library helpers who are working to keep us organized.
This year, our family has two girls ages 12 and 9, two boys ages 8 and 3, and one adult.
There are several ways that you can participate in the Holiday Sharing program:
- Choose an ornament from the "giving tree" (located in the staff lounge on the lower level of Bird Library), buy the gift listed on the label, and attach the tag to the gift. Remember, please don't wrap the gift.
- Help to stock the family's pantry by donating non-perishables or health and household items. In order to avoid duplicates, please contact Cindy Barry to let her know which items you'll be buying so she can take them off the list.
- Donate cash to purchase any gifts that were not selected, gift cards, and additional pantry items.
Please note: the family does not observe Christmas. For questions about gift specifics, contact Marianne Hanley. Remember that the gift suggestions come from the families and are "wish lists" -- do not think that all gifts listed must be purchased or are expected. Bring your UNWRAPPED gifts, non-perishables, health and household items, and cash to the Business Office by Thursday, December 12. Pickup and delivery of all donations takes place on two mornings in December, usually several days before Christmas. All of this information, and much more, can be found on our Holiday Family Sharing blog.

Did you know?
 | | Benjamin Disraeli |
Did you know that SU Libraries is one of only three libraries worldwide that have the title: the Hughenden Papers: papers relating to Benjamin Disraeli (Earl of Beaconsfield) and his family preserved at Hughenden manor, near High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire? The set consists of 155 microfilm reels for the 313 boxes of papers. The two other libraries that own this resource are the University of Massachusetts Amherst and Cambridge University in the United Kingdom. We have recently provided portions of this resource to scholars through Interlibrary Loan.
Onesime L. Piette wrote an article about the Hughenden Papers in The Courier in 1972 and said, "Benjamin Disraeli, who served in Parliament for more than forty years and twice held each of the posts of Prime Minister and Chancellor of the Exchequer, was indisputably one of the most colorful and influential figures in nineteenth-century British history.... The papers are basic to serious research efforts undertaken on any or all phases of his multifaceted career, ranging from statesman to litterateur."

Comments and complaints from the Interwebs
Almost every day, SU students comment and complain about the Library using social media outlets, such as Twitter. Many of their musings receive a reply from the Library's official Twitter handle, @SyracuseULib or the Learning Commons (@sulibrarylc). Here are some of the things that have been on their minds:
- Bird Library is a magical place where work gets done and dreams come true. #SuddenFreeTime
- Bird [Library] is my natural habitat. #fact #schoolbeforeanything #learn #educate
- Bird isn't a time or place... it's a lifestyle.
- Great job, guys. Keep up the excellent service.
- I just checked a book out of Bird Library @SyracuseU. It's due March 3 2014. I think I'll make it.
- @activitystory: Took a bunch of high school students to our library's Plastics Pioneers Reading Room and blew their minds.
- Great #maps collection on the 3rd floor of Bird Library. #605campus
- @wirednot: Syracuse University's Bird Library - as many as 2K simultaneous WLAN clients each night.
- DPS handing out donuts in Bird Library is cool.
- Eating an apple in dead silence on the quiet floor in Bird Library may be one of the most challenging things ever.
- Sneezed so loud in bird that people laughed. #obnoxious #sniffles
- Fire alarm goes off at Bird Library. Police are on the scene. Smells like someone burnt popcorn in the microwave next to Pages Cafe.
- Update: Club Bird is still here and did not burn down. #reallytho #backtostudying
- More outlets!
- Keep the team rooms open longer.
- Bird Library, get your act together and buy some more tables. There are 20,000+ people who go here.
- Why can't you log off [the computers] instead of having to shut down?
- Greasy keyboards in Bird Library quiet study freak me out.
- Idk what's more annoying: Yogurtland asking me if I want a pink/green spoon everytime I go or Bird Library closing the third floor at 12 pm?
- Please turn the heat on @SyracuseULib! Bird is freezing right now.
- Bird is freezing please fix it. :(
- Can't get any decent help from the [Tech Desk] at Bird Library 2 times now!
- So I have a fine for $170 for the Syracuse Bird Library. Ha! I'm not paying it. Some parking tickets aren't even that expensive.
- Delusional student thinks it's 'perfectly OK' to print out novel in Bird Library.
- You know you spend a lot of time at the library, & tweeting about your time at the library, when Bird Library starts favoriting your tweets.
