The newest exhibition, "4,000 Years and Counting," features treasures that highlight the breadth of the library's special collections -- from second-century-B.C. cuneiform tablets to the papers of notable contemporary figures like Joyce Carol Oates.
The exhibition opens with the origins of special collections at SU: the 1887 purchase of the eminent German historian Leopold von Ranke's library. In support of the acquisition, University Librarian C. W. Bennett made this assessment: "For this has always been my theory, that six thousand to ten thousand well-selected volumes are sufficient for the wants of the undergraduate, but to keep the professors from mental hunger and starvation, sources, authorities and books of a very different kind must be had in large numbers and in special collections."
The exhibition, which will remain up until August 30, occupies the display case on the first floor of Bird Library and the gallery on the 6th floor.

SUL name change and new identity
|
On July 22, Communications staff hosted a meeting to introduce new materials associated with the Libraries' new name and visual identity. The session introduced the expanded Communications website, which includes new editorial and visual style guides and links to new graphics files and templates previously stored on the shared drive. A repeat session will be held on August 7 at 3 p.m. in the Peter Graham Scholarly Commons. A hands-on session on working with the new identity materials will be scheduled in the near future.

Comments and complaints from the Interwebs
Almost every day, SU students comment and complain about the Library using social media outlets, such as Twitter. Many of their musings receive a reply from the Library's official Twitter handle, @SyracuseULib or the Learning Commons (@sulibrarylc). Here are some of the things that have been on their minds:
- Finding a power outlet in the airport is almost as hard as finding one in Bird Library.
- Looks like I landed a gig in the (Biblio) Gallery at Bird Library. Hiphiphooray.
- Problem: People who clearly aren't SU students come, stay, and use the library like they go to SU during summer.
- That presentation of special collection[s] in Bird Library just blew my mind! #ist511
- Found a first edition of The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling in Bird Library's showcase section.
- Bird Library...why are you so confusing? My stomach is full of Varsity and I just want to nap. Help me out here.
- I practically live in the E.S. Bird Library.
- It's too cold in here. Please turn down the A/C a bit.
- About 5 degrees too chilly for comfort.
- Too hot!
- Computers are great. I use them.
- Nice place to relax and chill out. Thank you!
- At SU Bird Library: Is there any greater atmosphere than a college library in summer?
- I love it here.

Kudos!
Charulata Chawan recently earned the Distinguished Toastmaster certification, the highest level within the Toastmasters program. To achieve Distinguished Toastmaster status involves years of study, dedication, self-discipline, and active participation in the Toastmasters organization. Only a few of the more than 260,000 members of Toastmasters ever achieve this honor. In addition, she was recently elected Eastern Division Governor for Toastmasters District 65. Last year she served as Area 12 Governor after holding office in the Orange Orators club for several years.
Penelope Singer was re-elected Vice President Public Relations of the Orange Orators and Yuan Li was elected Sergeant at Arms.
The Orange Orators meets here in Bird Library's Peter Graham Scholarly Commons on Tuesdays at noon. If you're curious to see what Toastmasters is all about, feel free to sit in on a meeting as a guest.
