Moving to Maine
 Thorin's last words
Dear Friends and Colleagues:

As I leave for Maine, I want to thank all of you for your wonderful work in the Libraries. As I look back over nearly eight years, I am proud of your achievements on behalf of the students and faculty at Syracuse University. From building the SU Library Facility to adding significant services for the faculty and building the first version of the Learning Commons, you have all been a part of our success. I wish you everything good in your work and personal lives.

All Best,
Suzanne E. Thorin

SUL name change and new visual identity
Syracuse University Libraries wordmark
Effective on July 1, 2013, the Library's official name will change from "Syracuse University Library" to "Syracuse University Libraries". There are several reasons for this change:
  • It helps move the University community away from its Bird-centric orientation;
  • It helps identify the network of facilities we manage for members of the SU community;
  • It begins to adjust notions of principal or special collections being tied to a specific building, and instead begins to foster inclusion of our collections within a system of facilities;
  • It facilitates future conversations about movement of collections to the Library Facility on South Campus.
Making a name change necessitates a change to the visual identity used on stationery, the website, and all manner of other corollary materials. To address this, a team of library staff (Cindy Barry, Pamela McLaughlin, Jeremy Morgan, Julie Sharkey, Penelope Singer, and Ron Thiele) have created a new visual identity (shown above) that has been approved by Dean Thorin and Interim Dean-designate K. Matthew Dames.

We have compiled a (long!) list of places where the identity will need to be replaced and will begin rolling it out over the course of the summer, with the goal of having the highest profile changes done by the start of the fall semester. We will be reaching out to specific individuals over the coming weeks to help facilitate updating various items for which they are responsible. We are also in the process of ordering new stationery. We will update the organizational name on business cards at the time they need to be reordered.

To assist in the transition to the new identity, the team has created a style guide and will place a variety of the new graphics files and templates in the Library Identity Materials folder on the shared drive. Please begin using this new terminology and graphics on July 1, for example, update your email signatures and voicemail greeting.

Please let Pamela McLaughlin know if you have any questions. Thanks for your assistance as we make this transition.

Syracuse University Library Joins Libraries Very Interested in Sharing (LVIS)

On May 10th, SU Library joined the international resource sharing group "LVIS," which is comprised of almost 2,800 University, College, Medical, Public, and Special Libraries. LVIS was founded 20 years ago by the Indiana State Library and the Missouri Library Network, and has grown steadily into a global group of libraries who are dedicated to encouraging sharing of collections.

As a member of this group, SU will receive free Interlibrary Loan services from any of the LVIS libraries in exchange for SU Library sharing its collections. With the LVIS group's blend of research, medical, popular, international, and government collections, having free access to these collections complements and supplements SU's collections and existing resource sharing memberships.

SU - the green

Will you be away from your campus office for an extended period this summer? If so, before leaving, please do the following:
  • Turn off and unplug all office and personal electronics such as computers, monitors, printers, paper shredders, televisions, chargers, etc.
  • Take home plants or have a co-worker take care of them.
  • Close and lock all windows.
  • Turn off all office lights on your way out.
All of these efforts save energy and contribute to SU's Climate Action Plan, the institutional blueprint for becoming carbon neutral.

In 2012, the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) Working Group on Transforming Special Collections in the Digital Age issued a call for proposals of case studies that demonstrated how special collections was being aligned, integrated, mainstreamed, or centralized into broader library operations. Twenty-six ARL institutions answered the call, offering a wide array of examples.

Sean Quimby, Senior Director of Special Collections, submitted Syracuse University Library's story of marshaling resources from across the library to drive the acquisition of and access to its plastics collection to support an area of developing research strength at the university.

Sean's case study, entitled "'There's a Great Future in Plastics': Mainstreaming a Special Collection" was one of six cases selected to document a diverse set of models in ARL's flagship publication Research Library Issues (RLI).

Read Sean's essay (pages 13-18), as well as the five other specially-selected submissions.

Congratulations, Sean!

Comments and complaints from the Interwebs
Comments and complaints from the Interwebs
Tell Us What You Think! Almost every day, SU students comment and complain about the Library using social media outlets, such as Twitter. Many of their musings receive a reply from the Library's official Twitter handle, @SyracuseULib or the Learning Commons (@sulibrarylc). Here are some of the things that have been on their minds:
  • Every table is empty at Bird Library and this guy has to sit with me.
  • Thank you @SyracuseULib 4 allowing us 2 host #SITEL2013 in the Spector. It was a wonderful place 2 host!
  • I miss Bird Library!
