SU Library Facility Open House
SU Library Facility Open House
SULF exterior

The Library is hosting an Open House on Tuesday, December 4 from 3 to 5 p.m. to celebrate the completion of the new Syracuse University Library Facility, located adjacent to the Hawkins building on Jamesville Avenue. Innumerable Library staff have been involved in the planning and successful completion of this project, so this event is a celebration of their efforts, as well. The Open House will include guided tours of the vault and processing areas, as well as demonstrations of equipment and technology tools.

To enable as many library staff to attend as possible, door-to-door transportation will be provided via both Library vans on a first-come, first-served basis. Once a van is filled, staff can wait 10 minutes for the next van, according to this schedule:

Leaving Bird Library (outside Waverly Ave. entrance):

Beginning at 2:50 p.m., a van will leave Bird every 10 minutes.

Last van will leave Bird at 4:30 p.m.

Returning from SULF:

Beginning at 3:30 p.m., a van will leave the SULF every 10 minutes.

Last van will leave the SULF at 5:10 p.m.

Welcome, Daniel and Daniel!

Daniel Beckett, Library Technician IV in Access & Resource Sharing, grew up outside of Washington, D.C. and later earned an M.A. in English Linguistics from North Carolina State University. Dan most recently worked as a baker and pastry cook, and had the opportunity to work the (southern hemisphere) 2010-2011 summer season at McMurdo Station, Antarctica. There, he exercised a dream by running a marathon across the Ross Ice Shelf and under the smoking outline of Mt. Erebus, the world's southern-most active volcano.

Daniel Trout
, Office Supervisor II in Access & Resource Sharing, worked most recently at the Rochester Institute of Technology managing the circulation department. Previous to working in libraries, he had a 14-year career at Wegmans where he was a deli manager and a chef along with various other jobs. Daniel has an undergraduate degree in Information Science from SUNY Oswego and also holds an MLS from the University of Buffalo. He currently resides in Rochester, NY with his fiancée. The couple plans to marry in October 2013.

It is with great pleasure to announce this year's DSA award recipient,
Pat Bench
, Supervisor in Acquisitions and Cataloging. The Distinguished Service Award recognizes a library staff member who has made a significant contribution to the user community.

Please give Pat a hearty congratulations and high five when you pass her in the building, and join us for the presentation of this prestigious award at the Library Holiday Party on Friday, Dec. 14.

Thank you to the DSA Committee (Russ Silverstein (chair), Tarida Anantachai, Sue Ehlers, David Stokoe, and Camille Chesley) for all of their hard work in getting this enormous job done!

Thanksgiving week clean up
 Thanksgiving week clean up
i'm not a turkey During Thanksgiving break week, a number of library administrators and custodians took advantage of the reduced traffic in the Library to clean up the cluttered area at the Waverly entrance to Bird Library. The bulletin board has been relocated to the vending machine area adjacent to the café and the newspaper dispenser is now in Room 122. Also removed were several dozen cardboard trash and recycling containers that had been proliferating on the lower floors. Next up, we are currently making arrangements for a deep cleaning of Bird Library during the semester break.

Disaster planning webinar and presentation
Disaster planning webinar and presentation

Disaster Planning As part of the Library's partnership with Gaylord Brothers, the Department of Preservation and Conservation presented two webinars for Gaylord's customers. Planning for Disaster, the second in the series, was presented on November 8th by Conservation Librarian David Stokoe. The show almost didn't go on. Just 20 minutes before the webinar was scheduled to start, an unannounced fire drill forced the evacuation of the building. In the best James Bond tradition, however, disaster was averted and all hands were on deck with just seconds to go. Over 200 viewers from across the US and around the world, including Argentina, Guatemala, and Argentina, participated. Slides and video are available online via SUrface at http://surface.syr.edu/pres_presentations/2/.

A disaster planning workshop for SUL staff and the region will place on November 30 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in the Peter Graham Scholarly Commons. An overview of the Library Disaster Plan, supply lockers, and salvage techniques will be given by David Stokoe, Conservation Librarian, and Marianne Haley, Assistant Conservator. Participants will also have the opportunity to try salvage techniques themselves.

Preservation and Conservation encourage Library staff to take advantage of disaster/salvage training opportunities offered in the Library and to continually refresh their skills. If water damaged items are returned by patrons or otherwise detected, please alert David Stokoe or other Preservation Staff.

Bird After Dark (Library Lock-In)
Bird After Dark (Library Lock-In)
BAD12 - Defying Gravity

The 7th Annual Library Lock-In took place November 2 from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. About 40 students participated in the "Bird After Dark" event, which was co-sponsored by the Library and the Office of Residence Life.

Though the turnout was smaller than other years, the energy level was high! As dance music blared, students raced through the library to search for answers to questions and beat the clock with "Minute to Win It"-style skill challenges. During breaks, participants enjoyed snacks, played games, received door prizes, and created colorful art projects.

Congratulations to the teams who scored highest and won the grand prizes:
  • First place: Tavid (Kindles)
  • Second place: Ben & Jerry (iPod Shuffles)
  • Third place: The Caped Crusaders (Syracuse Stage Tickets)
A big thank you goes out to all Library staff and volunteers who made this year's Bird After Dark a success, as well as the Office of Residence Life for publicizing the event and providing the refreshments, prizes, DJ, decorations, games and other activities!

"Food for Fines"
"Food for Fines"

Food for Fines On Thursday, November 8, the libraries of SU and SUNY-ESF participated in a "Food for Fines" amnesty day by collecting food for the needy and offering patrons the opportunity to reduce their overdue fines. A total of 535 non-perishable items were collected and donated to the Cathedral Emergency Services food pantry in downtown Syracuse.

Participating libraries include Bird, the Carnegie Library, the Geology Library, the Barclay Law Library, the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, the Architecture Reading Room, and ESF's Moon Library.

The program will be held again in the spring.

Library staff only list
Library staff only list

As you may know, the library listserv (library@listserv.syr.edu) includes a number of individuals who are not currently affiliated with SU Library, including ESF and Law Library staff, emeritus librarians, and others.

To provide a mechanism for communication with all current Library/Press staff only, LIT has created a new email distribution list: lib-dl-allstaff@syr.edu.

Please use this list for any internal communication that is relevant to or should be restricted to current staff only.

Please let Pamela McLaughlin know if you have any questions.

Cooking at Carnegie
Cooking at Carnegie
Joan Green, who donated her collection of about 900 cookbooks
to the SU Library.

The cookbook collection at Carnegie supports numerous academic programs at the University, but it is also available to all SU faculty, staff and students for their personal use and enjoyment.

In addition to hundreds of standard cookbooks, this large and growing collection of over 3,000 volumes also includes cookbooks focusing on international cuisines, specific populations and diets, including vegetarianism, weight loss, and the sick (diabetes, cancer, etc.). Beginning in the 1980s the collection has benefited from several large cookbook donations.

Whether you are interested in learning new techniques, eating healthier or planning a dinner party for 100, we probably have a cookbook for that!

See the Cooking at Carnegie Subject Guide for more information about this large and eclectic collection or contact Janet Pease.

2012 United Way Campaign activities
2012 United Way Campaign activities

United Way On Tuesday, November 6, the Library held its annual United Way Election Day Bake Sale in the Learning Commons. Due to the generosity of all the wonderful bakers and buyers, the event exceeded last year's total by a wide margin, raising $185 as part of our gift to the CNY community.

Don't forget to mark your calendar for the annual United Way Auction Extravaganza on Friday, December 7 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Peter Graham Scholarly Commons. Contributors may drop off auction items -- handmade items, art work, white elephant, theme basket/clever container, and silent auctions -- between now and December 7 to any team member (Carol Cavalluzzi, Nancy Cohen, Pat Hunt, Matt Reschke, Penelope Singer.)

And last, but certainly not least... don't you wish you could have another day off? Well, you can! Back by popular demand: A Library Day Off Donation Giveaway! Donation tickets are available in the Business Office for just $5.00 each through Friday, December 7. Remember, each $5.00 donation you make increases your chance for a bonus day off!

Thank you for supporting our community through your participation in the Library United Way activities, and by filling out your pledge card.

Holiday Sharing 2012
Holiday Sharing 2012

snowflake banner

The Library has once again signed on to participate in the Holiday Sharing Program. Started in 1991, Holiday Sharing is a voluntary program organized by volunteers around campus that pairs SU schools, colleges, and departments with families who need a little extra help. We have a wonderful team of  library "elves" who are working to keep us organized.

This year, our family has two boys ages five and 10, a two-year-old girl, a baby girl who is due in January, and two adults.

There are several ways that you can participate in the Holiday Sharing program:

  • Take a ornament off the tree in the basement lounge, buy and wrap the gift listed on the label for the family member.
  • Help to provide the ingredients for a holiday meal. A list of suggestions for holiday dinner items can be found here. Contact Cindy Barry if you are planning to bring in some of the items at a later date so she can take them off the list.
  • Donate cash to buy gifts as needed with the remainder going toward grocery store gift cards.
Please contact Marianne Hanley with questions about gift specifics. Remember that the gift suggestions come from the families and are "wish/Santa lists" -- do not think that all gifts listed must be purchased or are expected.

Bring your donations to the Business Office by Monday, December 17. Pickup and delivery of all donations takes place on two mornings in December, usually several days before Christmas.

All of this information, and much more, can be found on our Holiday Family Sharing LibGuide.

Comments and complaints from the Interwebs
Comments and complaints from the Interwebs
Tell Us What You Think! Almost every day, SU students comment and complain about the Library using Twitter. Many of their musings receive a reply from the Library's official Twitter handle, @SyracuseULib or the Learning Commons (@sulibrarylc) Here are some of the things that have been on their minds:
  • SU needs to take a good chunk of the 1 billion they just raised and seriously remodel Bird Library. #mostdepressingplaceoncampus
  • It would be great if you could keep the library open 24/7, even on Fridays and Saturdays.

  • Sooo can we just take books from Bird Library or do we have to check them out?
  • I already know that Bird Library is too old to get more electrical outlets but that doesn't mean I'm going to stop complaining.
  • Not sure why the entire campus is in club bird right now, but I really need an outlet.
  • It would be really nice if these computers in club bird would go faster so I could actually make it to class on time!
  • Wow... just lost everything I been working on since 8:30... thank you Bird Library.
  • It's always at the times you don't need to print anything at all that there are like 50 open computers in Bird Library.
  • There are 154 people on the first floor of Bird Library connected to the internet #computernetworkingstalking

  • Still wondering why Bird Library does not have a starbucks in it... #butseriously
  • So they remember my coffee order at the cafe in Bird Library.
  • Paper towel dispenser just activated for no reason in the bathroom... Bird Library is haunted.
  • Where is my "I Voted" sticker, Bird Library?! Old enough to vote, young enough to demand a sticker reward.
  • LOL at the fact Bird Library tweeted me back. I love it.
