APPLETON FAMILY FARM DAY:
THIS SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 15

Last year, parent and board member Bob Carroll helped us establish a presence at this wonderful kids' event, and he will be helping once again. We host the pumpkin painting table, which entails helping children choose paint colors and brushes and then cleaning up. We are looking for adult and upper school student volunteers to donate just an hour of their time. The event runs from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

Please contact Kelly Rostad, with the hour(s) you and/or your child want to help. We would love to have many GUS students there because they always represent the school so well. Please email Kelly at krostad@gus.org if you would like to help.  Click here for more information on the event.

PHOTO DAY:
TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 17
Coffee Pond Photography will be at GUS on Tuesday, September 17, to take individual and class photos.  You don't need to fill out a form in advance.  Just make certain your child is dressed appropriately on Photo Day.  The photos will be taken outdoors; if there is inclement weather, you will receive email notification that Photo Day will be rescheduled.

A few weeks after photos have been taken, you will receive instructions via email from Coffee Pond to view your child's portraits online. Note that you will not receive mail, as in the past. Be sure to set your spam blocker to accept emails from lifeguards@
coffeepond.com.  When you receive the email, with your private password, you can go directly to Coffee Pond's website http://www.coffeepond.com/ to place your order online.
If you have questions, please email Coffee Pond Photography at lifeguards@
coffeepond.com or call them weekdays, 9 AM to 5 PM, at 800-632-2323, ext. 0.

UPPER SCHOOL & JOHNSON ART GALLERIES: CURRENT EXHIBITIONS

Joan Benotti   Born in Boston, Joan Benotti has exhibited extensively throughout New England. She studied painting at the Rhode Island School of Design and printmaking at the Montserrat College of Art.  She was a founding member of the Bromfield Gallery, a Boston-based artists' cooperative, and was the recipient of a printmaking grant from the Massachusetts State Council on the Arts.  She lives on the North Shore.

Elynn Kröger   A native of Massachusetts, Elynn Kröger has exhibited her work for the past 40 years and can be found in collections internationally. Intuitive, abstract, impressionist, textile, gestural, calligraphic, spatial, and organic, her work is not easily categorized. While working primarily with water-based media, Kroger also employs graphite and oil sticks. Sometimes hundreds of washes or layers can go into a piece, making the artist's expression of freshness, subtlety, and color all the more remarkable.

Kröger has been acknowledged since the start of her career; she placed first in painting in her debut showing,  received a Massachusetts Council for the Arts grant, and achieved "Copley Artist" status in Boston. She was also selected to be a member of the New England Water Color Society, the youngest artist at the time of her induction. A resident of Gloucester for the past sixteen years, Kröger has exhibited her work locally at West End Studios/Gallery, Local Colors Gallery, "The Church" Gallery, the River Gallery, Passports Restaurant, the Hour Glass Gallery in Melrose, MA, and also at the Johnson Gallery in Beverly Farms, MA.

Both exhibitions run through October 25.

A native of Maryland, Green is a graduate of Georgetown University, where he was named Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA East Regional and Big East Player of the Year, along with receiving Big East Tournament MVP honors. As co-captain, Green led Georgetown in scoring. Since that time, Green has emerged as one of the leading players for the Boston Celtics, one of the oldest teams in the NBA.

Perhaps Green's biggest achievement to date is overcoming a life-threatening heart condition. He currently works with the American Heart Association and children all over the country who are dealing with heart ailments. Green says he is motivated not only by basketball, but he also believes in the importance of education and wants to inspire others who have obstacles to overcome.

Families, please join us for the second annual Family Fiesta on Wednesday, October 2nd, as we welcome nine children from the NPH orphanage in Mexico. Our friends from Mexico will visit classes during the day, sharing stories and interacting with our students.   In the evening, our Family Fiesta will feature a Mexican dinner for all, followed by a music and dance performance by our NPH guests.

NPH (Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos) runs a network of homes for abandoned and orphaned children in nine Latin American countries, transforming the lives of young people who otherwise would have no hope for the future. GUS has had a close relationship with NPH for almost 10 years:

            * Our 8th graders have traveled during Work Week to NPH homes in

            Honduras and the Dominican Republic.

*Our Upper School students sponsor three children, writing letters to

Raymundo (Mexico), Dulce (Honduras), and Yoneuri (Dominican

Republic) and raising money to support them.

*An Upper School NPH Club raises awareness and supports the work of

            these homes.

The Family Fiesta, 5:30-7:30, is a rare opportunity to meet children from an organization that makes a huge difference for disadvantaged kids. Please come enjoy a fun evening of food, friends, dance, and FIESTA!
