Greetings!
This e-bulletin provides the latest news pertaining to building codes and energy efficiency requirements.

ALBERTA BUILDING CODE AND
ENERGY EFFICIENCY REQUIREMENTS
ABC
The building code currently in force in Alberta is the 2006 Alberta Building Code (ABC).

The 2014 ABC, except for Section 9.36., comes into force 1 May 2015. This Code is based on the 2010 National Building Code (NBC).  

The 2006 edition may be used after 1 May provided:
  • the permit was issued before the end of the six-month transition period (ends 1 November 2015), or
  • the building official is satisfied that preparation of plans and specifications began before 1 May.
Section 9.36. Energy Efficiency 
Section 9.36. Energy Efficiency, incorporated into the NBC by revision in 2011) comes into force 1 May 2016. The transition period ends 1 November 2016.

National Energy Code for Buildings
The 2011 National Energy Code for Buildings comes into force in Alberta on 1 November 2015. Transition period ends 1 May 2016.
