The Cussing Needle
The Cussing Needle is my term for an imaginary societal barometer which, if it could, would assess audience reaction to socially "unacceptable" words or other triggers.
In lieu of such a machine, the speaker's rule of thumb is to avoid "colorful" language, as my grandmother would have phrased it, when in a professional or formal setting. This includes many, many terms used on television, in casual conversations, and among peers.
Of course, wisdom is knowing when to bend or break the rules.... I actually did once, but only once, hear Grandmother use "colorful" language-and to her credit, it was when she thought she was quite alone.
