I'm Headed to the Parade What makes a great 4th of July parade? Flocks of kids on bicycles dragging red, white, and blue streamers, panting dogs wearing red bandanas, pink-cheeked babies in strollers, neighborhood floats with hand-painted signs, firetrucks blaring horns, in short, people coming together in tribute to our country. We celebrate this crazy idea a few radicals spread in the late 1700s - that it might be possible to actually build a country based on citizens voting their own opinions, without monarchy, military dictator, or depot. It's still a crazy, evolving experiment that began with a few conversations and grew into a chorus for humanitarianism. For now, I'm digging out my red tee shirt, blue shorts, and the dog's bandana. My biggest "speaking" gig this weekend will be parade yelps and my "body language" will be waving a little flag as I hold the tiny hand of my two-year old grandson. It's a grand birthday party, after all. Alex B. Ramsey July 3, 2014 Vol. 6 Iss.15
