Magical Powers of Three? According to some presentation pundits, three is the mystical number for speaking success. Three is a pleasant enough number, and I've mentioned its usefulness in a talk versus some much greater number several times here. Others apparently disagree with my soft stand on the value of threes. One colleague said his coach insisted all content be packaged in "threes." Yet, what if one point says it all, do make up three more? Or, if you need to make five points for cohesion and understanding, do you leave out the step that might save someone's life? Is three more important than substance? Silly old-fashioned me: My view is how much to include or how little depends on many elements such as what's being discussed, the audience, the skill of the speaker, time, objectives, and much more. What's more magical than threes? Common sense itself. Alex B. Ramsey June 26, 2014 Vol. 6 Iss.14
