Two Dramas for the Price of One

Settling into my pricey fourth-row seat, with high hopes for a gracefully calm evening, my fingers were crossed that the two empty seats in front of me would remain free and clear. I was attending the opening night of a sold-out production of Swan Lake. I sighed as, 12 minutes into the production, during a pivotal moment, an usher swooshed in "Annoying Late Couple," and I did my best to ignore their crawling over eight sets of knees and toes to those empty seats, limiting my view.

That wasn't the end of it; as 30 minutes later, something more interesting happened. That's when another elderly patron, furious, (let's call her "Aunt Bertha") reached over the lap of still another guest and swatted Late Lady with her Swan Lake program!

Late Lady's cell phone had rung; and oblivious to her narcissism, Late Lady started texting, which, apparently, was more than dear Aunt Bertha could stand.

Aunt Bertha, wherever you are, take a bow. You deserve a bouquet, standing up both for the performers giving their best and their loyal audiences .
