Putin the Powerful
A master of consistency in his communication, Russian president Vladimir Putin presents an immutable, macho-man image that mirrors his blunt, even crass, speech. Russians are richer than ever, self-satisfied that the world quakes in his wake.Touted the world's most powerful person, his brand also elicits names such as dictator, super hero, and spy.
When it comes to power, people follow money like a coon dog follows a sent trail. Even though Putin's declared income is less than $200,000, he affords all manner of luxury; and some journalists put his true wealth closer to a staggering $70 billion. As a result of Putin's leadership, Russia's economy has exploded since his ascent, with purchasing power increasing six fold.
But the purpose of this column is to discuss communication, not Swiss bank accounts-as interesting as those are. Still, this week the two intertwine. Putin delivers the money, looks the macho part, and his countrymen follow eagerly. Putin, in word and deed, fulfills the Rambo-esque fantasies of a long depressed nation.
