Gracie Gold Shifts Gears
How does a consummate professional find the balance necessary between delivering the best of yourself without succumbing to the emotional demons perfectionism creates?
US Olympic skater Gracie Gold's mother says that just last September, her now famous daughter was "crumbling," under perfectionism's vicious clench.
To shift gears, Gracie moved to LA from Chicago to train with legendary 75-year old skating coach Frank Carroll, an excellent skater who, nonetheless, never made the Olympics. Soon, instead of sputtering, Gracie skated better than ever-and earned her spot on the US Team.
Coach Carroll provided the young skater with
- a sense of calm perspective,
- a specific technique for recovering from off-kilter jumps thus restoring her confidence,
- and a process for releasing the demonic mindset of "perfectionism."
A side effect of Gracie's new-found freedom is her willingness to publicly speak her mind, reveal her personality, and, thereby, take a stand as leader of the US team.
The coach's advice rings true for us speakers who do well to remember the journey to excellence trumps self compassion only in the short haul, never over the long one.
