The Coconut Butter Laryngitis and Grumpy Throat Tip

Weathering this difficult winter with dry air and ever present allergies means we're all looking for ways to stay healthy and productive, even on off days when throats are scratchy or voices gravelly. Over many years, I've developed a tool box of techniques to handle minor throat issues as naturally as possible. I'm especially susceptible and have learned that, most of the time, more gentle ideas work better for me versus prescription or even over- the-counter solutions.

Pure, unprocessed coconut butter (not oil) sometimes puts my throat and voice back in balance. I'll use the following technique a few times a week or when I'm speaking a lot:

  • put a big spoonful (1-3 teaspoons) in mouth and let it melt-no swallowing!
  • swirl it around gently for 15 minutes
  • allow saliva to mix in while swirling
  • spit out the foamy residue
  • brush your teeth with a mild toothpaste, no heavy mouthwashes which agitate the balance just created
  • drink several big glasses of water

Some of my more naturally inclined health-care practitioners say this helps balance the bacteria in your mouth. All I know is that It seems to improve mild complaints I sometimes have.

Try it, and see if it makes any difference for you.

P.S. I even pack a small amount of coconut butter when I travel.
