Did you ever stop to think about the importance emotions play in your ability to successfully complete your goals? A recent
Wall St. Journal story on goals, surprisingly to some, examined new research on making decisions and setting goals successfully. To quote:
"Rationality isn't about getting rid of emotions, but analyzing...and taking them (emotions) into consideration when making decisions."
The key is that there's a relationship between making good decisions and setting goals you can successfully accomplish. In the middle of that relationship, emotions are the glue smack, dab, in the middle, either supporting or sabotaging success in achieving goals. Although my own clients understand this idea well, it may be contrary to the way many people were educated to think.
Be advised! This is not about a year-end resolution. Rather, it is a tool to focus into being the realities you most desire. Even I do this process myself every year, always learning something unexpected and valuable. What you'll be receiving is the first step of an expanded program for strategic planning. For an individual, this applies to both personal and professional aims.
Rather than letting the whims of circumstance determine your future or succumbing to analysis paralysis, Star Goals facilitate your ability to
- integrate last year's lessons and accomplishments,
- determine high-quality goals for 2014, and
- activate the goals with first-step actions.
For perspective, in 2013, I was almost crazed with an abundance of personal and professional challenges: ... moved my 86-year old father into a nursing home, repaired and sold his home in record time for a record amount, bought real estate for two other immediate family members who needed housing, handled the affairs of my 105-year old grandmother - just to name a few items on the list. Let's not forget the healthy arrival of my first granddaughter Campbell on December 20, 2013.
That was all happening in addition to a full load of consulting clients, teaching entrepreneurship at the Cox School of Business at SMU, and leading a multi-million dollar family business (which had one of its better years over a 37-year history).
I simply could not do these things without Star Goals.
Using the process, I'm more clear and focused on what needs to be different this year.
Most of my readers and clients appreciate how quickly efficient Star Goals is without being overly complicated. It is different from traditional goal setting for several reasons.
- You can complete it in an hour or less, although I suggest spending a bit more time on it. You can even break it up into 15-minute chunks and still whip through most of it quickly.
- It's not a purely intellectual, quantitative process. There's a qualitative aspect that provides extra energy and motivation for accomplishing the goals.This makes it more fun, too.
- You will feel a tremendous sense of accomplishment and relief for taking action. This frees you up for even more enlightened (emphasis on "lightening") actions.
