When Democracy Depends on a Mouse
"A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic," said Winston Churchill in an October 1938 speech.
Of course, his "Little Mouse of Thought" referred to Democratic ideas; and he was denouncing the militarization and totalitarianism of Germany and Italy as the stage for World War II was unfolding.
His words, as true today as 75 years ago, echoed current world realities in that where freedom of speech exists it follows that people live more freely.
What you and I can take away from Churchill, one of the greatest of speakers, is how he meticulously worked on his speaking throughout this entire life-often working one hour for every minute of formal speaking that he delivered. It didn't just "happen." As a leader, that was his job.
