There's No Crying in Baseball
As team manager to the "Rockford Peaches," Tom Hanks' character blurts this famous line from A League of Their Own to one of his distressed female ball players.
The audience, recognizing the futility of the advice under the circumstances, responds with peals of laughter, since the player is already a puddle of tears. Telling her to "stop" is about like telling rain clouds to dry up and go away.
Philosophy is one thing. Current realities are another matter.
When dealing with difficult employee or business issues, getting clear, in advance of the meeting, about how people are feeling is one of the more powerful tools you have to focus your thoughts effectively and successfully motivate the behaviors your desire.
