Balancing Act
An effective talk, whether five or forty-five minutes, is, among other things a balancing act. To be effective and hold an audience's attention and respect, you've must choose your words to have perspective, balance, and rhythm-highs and lows, intensity coupled with smoothness-opposites as in packets and pauses, shifts and changes.
The same principles apply at a conference where you may have multiple speakers. If they are all too similar, the audience will be bored and tune out. Just as a good film has a dramatic arc, audiences expect and deserve a structure and content that takes them on a journey.
