All Eye Contact is not Alike

Especially if you are a rookie speaker, the three-second rule helps you gauge how long to maintain your gaze in one area of the room-- three seconds at that person on the right, three back near the middle, and so on.

After a short while, you get the hang of it, since we all know that effective eye contact creates a connection between speaker and audience with both too much and too little being equally bad.

To really wow an audience, though, you not only have to make this kind of simple eye contact, you also have to let them in. You have to drink them through your eyes. You have to inhale them with appreciation, compassion, and, dare I say it? Love.
