Donkeys Don't Play Soccer

And Cell Phones Don't Make Eye Contact

High-status professionals tend to look longer at the people they're talking to, compared with others, so confirms recent research highlighted in the Wall St. Journal' s article Just Look Me in the Eye Already.

A major career transition company recently asked me to speak to an audience of executive and mid-level people "in transition." In other words, they need work; yet during first 30 minutes of "networking," rather than talk to the humans in the room, almost everyone's head was buried in a cell phone or laptop.

Being rather shy myself and knowing it can be hard to connect with those you don't know well, I say this with great love in my heart: Getting these folks to "network" was like asking a donkey to play soccer.

What seems like a "duh" observation, meaning that there's a correlation between success and eye contact, is an opportunity for increased professional success and an important reminder for us all.
