The Graduate's Rainbow The Hockaday Class of 2013 peered out the dressing room door hoping the rain would stop in time for their traditional outdoor graduation. The 80 young women, huddled in classic all-white gowns like a bevy of young swans, trying not to crush their wide-brimmed, flower-garlanded hats, watched grey clouds drop pellets of rain, tears occasionally dripping down cheeks.
That is except for the one the class elected to speak for them a week earlier, the shy, brainy, wry one, who refused to let the possibility of disappointment derail her.... Having attended this difficult prep school since kindergarten, she'd weathered worse, including her beloved father's death from cancer when she was a vulnerable 12-year old.
Just when it seemed the ceremony was destined for the musty old gym instead of the petunia-covered columns, the clouds parted; school officials whisked them onto the stage; and she delivered her speech like the pro she had become.
With uncanny timing, as she delivered her final words, a rainbow appeared in the skies overhead, almost as if Dad himself were there signaling his approval; and she felt, for the first time in her life, the majesty of her singular voice.
