Is TED-Type Talk A Misnomer?
When the conference's head honcho said, "We'll start our event with a series of TED-type talks," my initial reaction was, "cool, sounds plugged in." After all, TED, an acronym for Technology, Entertainment and Design, is wildly successful. Then, I looked at the speakers under consideration, old standbys versus fresh voices.
When Head Honcho further added, "that means, they'll be focused and brief," my heart sank further. Honcho missed TED's essence. Short and dull is only marginally better than longer and dull.
Even if it was misapplied in this case, the TED analogy raises the bar for every one who speaks as an expert or professional :
How can you shatter tedium, every time you speak, with new ways of visioning our world and not just deliver shorter versions of the same-old, same-old?
