berry-growing 101 with lee reich, plus my smoky bbq black-eyed peas

Dessert-quality gooseberries to grow

Making room for backyard berries just makes sense, says Lee Reich. You'll never find the best-flavored varieties in any market -- they're just not "commercial." (You know: "commercial" like a supermarket tomato...ugh!)

Get Lee's 101 on creating a backyard berry garden of the best raspberries, gooseberries, blueberries and more, including ideas for gorgeous, edible, fruit-filled hedges.

Plus: Maybe win Lee's "Grow Fruit Naturally" book, and even better, come hear him speak at my May 10 open garden day. It's all here

Interviewing cookbook authors can be hazardous work, causing unexpected detours to the grocery store in search of something you just suddenly must have -- and then into the kitchen, to make something you just suddenly must try.

Though I should be outside with my rake in hand, just such a side trip this week led me to a double batch of smoky, spicy barbecued black-eyed peas instead. The easy recipe.

P.S. -- So sorry to screw up the link to the April garden chores in the last newsletter. The snow had just melted -- finally! -- and I was hurrying to get outside by dawn to rake. Or maybe I hadn't had enough tea yet. Oops! Here they are.
