what's your top tomato? plus: sow shallots, collect oddball nicotiana, more

'Upstate Oxheart' tomato at Seed Library farm

No, please don't start your tomato seeds yet, unless you are in some place far warmer than the snow cave I find myself in. (On that last score: If you don't hear from me, tell the 911 guys to look between the house and bird feeder, in the thigh-high drifts. The biggest lump will be me.)

But back to the subject: It's prime time to shop for tomato seeds -- if you're prepared to be overwhelmed at the choices. Some top tomatoes I have my eye on for 2014's garden (and I hope you'll tell me yours).

giant banana shallot from seed

first things first: shallot from seed

I won't start tomatoes here till income tax time in mid-April, but I will get going on shallots and onions soon. Last year I grew zaftig "banana shallots," just like this. (It's almost time to sow the leeks, too, up my northerly way, in case you're keeping track.)

stalking 12 unusual nicotiana (hummingbird favorites)

"Find more Nicotiana" was one of my to-do's last year, aimed at more summer-into-fall pleasure for me and visiting hummingbirds. Little did I know that searching for seed for unusual species (like the yellow one, below left) would lead me to the peripatetic farmers of Walking Roots Farm -- one of whose names, Kollibri, means hummingbird. Score! The story.

Nicotiana glauca and Salvia Raspberry Delight

miss it last time? mint cousins for a garden abuzz

Agastache, Salvia (above right), and Phlomis are three more hummingbird- and pollinator-friendly plants I'm adding to my garden, and expert David Salman gave me a tour of the very best among many colorful choices.

P.S. -- Grab a ticket to March 22's 4th annual Seedy Saturday at the historic Grange in Copake, New York, where I'll be speaking (and Turtle Tree and Seed Library will be selling seeds, and sharing their expertise in an open Q&A, too). Details here.
