I hope the so-called polar vortex is loosening its grip on you and your garden. Yikes! How about some warming recipes, and more seeds to dream about, to help take the edge off winter?
lentils, please! my ingredient of the month
Pulse: As in the edible seeds of a legume -- and as in, mine quickens at the thought of anything made of lentils right about now. I could no longer resist the last casserole of Lentil, Mushroom and Sweet Potato Shepherd's Pie that I'd stashed in the freezer in November (those are the ingredients before assembly, above). Now it's gone! Three favorite lentil recipes, including my own Barbecue Lentils (minus the grill) and, of course, soup.
giveaway: uprising seeds' better beets, northern tomatoes, black popcorn and more
What makes a better beet, and how does a tomato variety get coaxed and cajoled to growing lustily in northerly non-tomato country? What crops can be developed to feed fresh-produce-starved consumers in the leanest months? These are the kinds of questions that the organic farmers at Uprising Seeds of Bellingham, Washington, work to answer. My interview with co-founder Brian Campbell, and a chance to win some Uprising specialties.
